Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The best man for tank building and drilling is Gerry Evens of Water World

I wouldn't go drilling a tank yourself get a pro to do it for you its a tough job you need the correct tools one mistake and there is no going back could end up been very pricey

First of all is your glass tempered???If it is it is impossible to drill as it will shatter no matter what.
Drilling glass is not that risky once done right but there is a risk with everything and if you have not done it before ask yourself would really be worth the risk?

To answer your question the more powerful the better but most should be able to do this job just make sure you have it on full speed.

If you do decide to go ahead and drill it. I have a good bit of experience in the matter so here is some tips.

First is safety your bringing a high powered, high voltage drill very very close to water so please dont forget that.

Use a new Diamond tip drill bit as they will cut with no problem what so ever.

Have the cutting tool and glass covered by water this can be done on of 2 ways the best way is take it out back and have the hose on it while cutting but if this can not be done make a ring out of plumbers putty stick it to the glass and put water in the ring.

Having it covered in water prevents heating and also gets rid of the glass dust that can be lethal in large amounts.
Stop every 15 to 20 seconds to allow the glass and water to cool adding fresh water if needed.

Dont put any pressure on the drill at all the weight of the drill should be enough to work its way down. And finally if you dont have a steady hand try using a drill guide as the drill can give a bit of a kick.

Drilling the glass is very easy once you have set it up right and if you do as i have said the changes of the glass breaking are very slim.

Good luck
And make sure the glass is not tempered otherwise you have no hope at all.
