Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

If u knew someone that does kitchens or cabinet making that could spray it for u,thats what i would do. 100 times better than the finish a brush leaves. Also a lot quicker

I used to be a cabinetmaker (doing a fair bit of spraying) and that's exactly what I'd recommend. That finish you have on it now would need to be carfully prepped before it would accept paint. A brush job would look cat and would flake off after a short time. Just bring it to a sprayer. What is your location and I might be able to give you a contact.

No problem painting the Stand and hood , Just remove the hood from the tank and tank from the stand and away you go with your brush. Get help lifting that monster of a tank it'll be very heavy.

First you would have to sand the whole thing down not back to the bare timber but just lighty to give new paint a bit of grip. Then maybe a coat or two of undercoat and then gloss it.Do u know what colour ur going for,Id imagine black would require less coats than white

Not with those doors. Would look a bit early 90's in my opinion. Would look good in black satin or gloss if you changed the doors for plain doors with a contemporary handle and with the edges rounded.

Well if ur gonna go down the road of getting new doors and a whole respray its gonna set u back a couple of hundred.Id say 200+ anyway.Wolfsberg could probably give u better estimate. In my opinion if u dont like the colour dont buy unless its a right bargain

It would be wortth in todays tank selling market done up abouts €700.

As for the doors matey I'd leave em. Sand the lot. You can mix a white matt paint with water and spray it on with any sort of spray bottle, do this let it dry repeat 2 times more till your happy it is coated properly. Then paint it Ocean Blue gloss:) Would look awesome.

If you decide to brush paint, use a very very fine brush obviously using the very tips of the brush only to paint, when done right it looks fine, no visible lines.

Nice tank for a good project.

Get on with it:)
Edited in a link for Ocean Blue palette.

if you get it for 200 make a sump for little or nothing (it's your best bet)and buy a couple of heaters

you could do a decent job on this and really make it look great,

Definately try to spray it, but it will need a key beforehand, undercoat it and then satinwood it, if money is issue and you dont want the expense of spraying it then try using a roller on it (small spongy one- not the wool type), much better fininsh than brush but not as good as sprayed.

A filter and heater will set you back about 200€, cheaper if you buy 2nd hand, what is the volume?

i would go with an antique white/cream, would contrast nicely with a blue background or planted. Couple of new knobs and I know this would look awesome.

good luck whatever you decide

Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.
