Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Buying RO water

Hi there i decided to this as a topic as i saw a little confusion in a reccent post.
It is very important to note that when you buy RO water you are buying it for its purity and not its PH.Purity is one thing PH is another.

For instance if a shop aerates its RO water then the PH will climb because of the oxygen levels because the RO does not have the capacity to buffer itself.Furthermore if a shop leaves its RO water standing exposed to air then the RO water will tend to become acidic because it will absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and the PH will progressively drop.

It is up to the customer to set the Ph for his own use unless you tell the shop what you require but even then the Ph will vary this is the downside of RO water. So i would not blame the shop because RO water is too unstable.....they are selling pure water....with a variable ph.
Depending then on aquarium conditions the longterm Ph is what most matters....
Hope this helps.....we make 2000 litres of RO a day......it can be trying sometimes.....
Cheers
Ian

I hope this is a positive contribution....:)

yo dude as i said if anyone needs any help u know me i would be glad to help....its getting the time to do it......i do most of this kinda stuff from 8 in the morning till 1030 opening time so if people want they can post me a topic and ill banter away like i do in the shop....but there are too many posts to tackle head on.....
anyway cheers for that i would not like to see a shop look bad for no reason.....it is vital that customers get their facts right thats why it is vital that the customers goes back to the shop and brings up these issues.Water is a very complicated beast i have been battling for 20 yrs...i have a spring that supplies water at a PH of 6-6.5 i have a well that gives me concrete with a Ph of 7 and then we make moxy loads of RO.
Also just to let everyone know and maybe you could highlight this......that i give away thousands of free spring water every week perfect for tetras n discus...one of my customers collects 400 litre a week free.....so if anyone else needs decent amazing water they are more than welcome to collect it freeeeeee........

cheers dude
