Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Before I only heard from people about this practice of dyeing fish and had never seen them before, that all changed recently.
1 shop has a big poster by their fishtank wich states "beautifull coloured parrot fish" Beautiful??? it is the ugliest thing I ever did see, bleu, hot pink, green and all the other not natural occuring colours in these fish, I ran out of that shop, raging because they have a good selection of fish food for a reasonable price, but I won't be going back there anytime soon.
Then a couple of days ago, I went to a lfs close to my inlaws as I decided to look after his tank from now on (diffirent story) and fished his 3 spot gourami out of his tank to bring it back to the shop.
There they were again, I asked the guy did he know what was involved in to getting these fish to that colour, he just shrugged and said they would lose that colour after a while.
(he didn't mention the fact that the lifespan of these dyed parrot fish was also cut in half by the process they underwent)

Sorry just had to rant

Mrs F, whats involved in to getting these fish to that colour?
Personally I wouldn’t intentionally buy dyed fish but what are the issues with it?

Well done Mrs F. Ive come across this on occassions and left the shops fuming. I even had stuff paid for once and asked for a refund once Id seen the fish. They are not normal fish, they are highly modified and hugely unhealthy. LB the actual way of going about dying fish is the most inhumance part of it all, injecting the dye into the fish where the survival rate is low and the health problems encountered is massive for those that do survive. Also many of the fish lose the colouring soon but will always have the health problems ascociated with it. Its a huge industry in Asia such as China and particularly Japan.
The industry needs to take a serious look at this type of fish being realeased to the general market. If a dog pound found a dog with health problems it would put it down. Instead some fish shops actively seek these unhealthy fish and then sell them onto the customers. Its a disgrace. I dont want to get started here, youve flipped a button here about something that I actively hate and am delighted to see that you stood by your principles Mrs F.

hey,

I agree its wrong. Ive seen some and they just dont look right at all. Why do some people think that it is all right>>>>>>>  :(

It makes me sick to think people can openly sell these fish when they know what it takes to do this. I feel sorry for the people buyin them coz they dont know what they are buyin or what they are getting into and the people selling them dont explain that due to the injection of the dye that the quailty and health of the fish or nothing compared to the undyed fish.

Was gonna say something to this man looking at them but he didnt buy them thank god!!!!!!!!!!!

Had a look at the link Mrs f and the pics are sick why do people do such horrible things

I think it’s fair to say that the majority of us would not agree with injected fish but would there be a problem with colour-fed fish? Personally I still wouldn’t buy colour-fed fish but if you were sure that a shop was selling colour-fed fish rather than injected fish would you still not buy from that shop on principal?

(quote PFK) Heavily colour-fed fish should be fed a special colour food if you wish to sustain their bright colouration. There are no welfare issues relating to this form of colour-feeding.

Good point LB,

Dont really know my self personally it would come down to a few issues

Does it coz any health problems.

Is there any lasting problems.

Does it effect the life span of the fish in question.

I do prefere undyed fish dont like the idea of harm beening caused just to "imporove the look" of the fish.

Id dont think we can do dat? can we.............?

If we could stop stuff like this from happening it would be great but there must be a market for them if some pet shops sell them.

I have noticed its genearl pet shops that sell them and not out and out aquatic stores?

Whem reading some of the things here it would make you so mad:angry::angry:.I have heard of this before but have never seen what the fish look like and i could not see how anyone would want a fish that looks so bad in a tank. Are there no laws in this country to stop the sale or import of these poor fish.Another sick practice that gets me going is people that feed goldfish to paranas.

I agree with the name and shame route, the only way we can have an impact on this issue is to hit the shops in the pocket where it counts, all the talk and debate is like water off a ducks back to these shops.
If you disagree avoid the shops that sells these fish, if it is that you haven,t got a problem with these fish then use these shops as you please.
I think (hopefully) that there is more people against this type of treatment of fish so Vote With You Feet And Wallets!!!!

Naming and Shaming is not permitted on the forum for several reasons, including legal.

This issue was discussed at lenght at the ITFS AGM, while everyone present disagreed with the practise of dying fish, it was felt the best action was to vote with your feet after politely telling the shop owner / manager that you would not be shopping there while they continued to stock dyed fish.

Another issue is that not all users would recognise dyed fish, anyone knows a fish should not have "I Love You" tattoo'd in its side, but it is not always as simple as that to recognise, some dyed fish do not look as distinct as others. Colour feeding is another issue too.

By all means avoid shops selling died fish, but do not name them here in public.

If you suspect a sponsor of selling died fish, please pm Admin.

I agree this practice is horrendous and should not be done, naming and shaming isn't the way forward on this i feel if it is said to the staff / manager of this establishment enough they have to take notice, especially if people tell them "i was going to buy from you but as you sell these fish i will take my business to a shop that dosent" and vote with your feet... soon enough the penny will drop and shops will stop stocking them

Note to Admin
why not ask our sponsors to sign an anti fish dye pledge, anti fish tattooing pledge and anti hybrid pledge (horrible ballon mollies etc) then if they do brilliant i'd shop there and then break it name and shame

the likes of these Balloon mollies are bred from fish with a genetic defect, if this defect is then desired(god knows why???) then fish with this deformaty are selectively bred to keep the defect, this continues which ingrains the defect in their genetic code which i personally think is a cruel practice and this is what gives their shape which is generally a million miles away from the true shape of the fish.

I know where your going with hating this, but why not just ask the lfs to stop selling them, if enough people say it they will stop selling them, just walking away angry or fustrated acheives nothing.
we are the people who keep them in business and they will start paying attention through this forum and customers informing them POLITELY of their dislike for modified / dyed etc fish
