Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

my tank is still flairly new so not fully stocked yet but i have the general cuc,a green bristle star fish, chalk goby and some yellow belly damsels and an algea blennie...

i just noticed the green bristle star fish is hidding under a rock and has the algea blennie and the cleaner shrimp is trying to pull the blennie free at this point i probly think that the blennie is dead,so ripping the tank apart wont save him,,,i know the starfish is only doing what comes naturally to him but its not really the kind of tank mate i wanted

the only thing is what do i do now?????

The starfish is a scavenger so yeah he's just doing what comes naturally. You said your tank is new, how long is it set up?
Maybe just unlucky but the first thing I would do is check the water parameters in case something isn't right.

the tanks probly set up 12-14 weeks, havent checked the water since sunday when i did a water change but could this cause the starfish to be that aggressive that he'd try and eat the blennie????i'll check it again torrow.

the cleaner, boxer and fire shrimp are all taking it turns to pull the blennie free,,i dont want to pull the blennie out cause the star fish could try and eat one of the others then,

Sorry I just realised what starfish you said you have. Usually a starfish will eat a dead fish after it has died, as a scavenger accepting an easy meal.
But the star that you have can actually catch and eat fish, specially ones that like to hide in rocks.
It's able to kind of stand its body off of the ground creating a kind of cave letting fish "hide" under there. But then it just grabs them and eats them.
So a fish like an algae blenny could easily see that as a spot to hang out in only to be grabbed and killed :(
I hope i'm wrong but you could very well have a fish eater in your tank!

Got up this mornimg and the shrimps had done me a favour and pulled the blennie out fromn under the rock,so they saved me pulling the whole tank apart, the thing that gets me is he didnt even eat the blennie, just killed it  and the star has been sitting there all day perched between two rocks just waiting for some more prey to swim or rest beneath him,,,think this fella has to go
