Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Potting up an anemone !!!!

Picked up this tip on one of my research sessions the other night. So when I finally got hold of a Bubble Tip Anemone (BTA)E. quadricolor. I took some photos tonight to show the principle.

E. quadricolor loves to hide its foot deep into a crevice and poke its tentacles out to gather light and feed. This principle is incompatible with LiveRock recommendations that each rock is well spaced and plently of circulation allowed to flow around each rock. Hence normally when a BTA is placed in a reef tank, it wanders trying to find a secure crevice to hide its foot, stinging other inverts as its wanders and usually meets its end sucked into a powerhead and becoming mincemeat. This brilliant tip is like all the best inventions, SIMPLE. Whilst acclimatising the anemone to the aquarium in its bag. Have alook at its foot to get an idea of the approx size it is.

Next get a clean clay pot of a size appropiate to the size of the foot and soak it in tank water for 10 minutes.

Place the pot at the bottom of the tank and removing the anemone from the bag, place it \"feet\" first into the pot.

Give the BTA a good 10 to 20 minutes to secure itself inside. It should now be nice and snug. You can test this by picking up the pot and inverting it underwater. If the BTA falls out, give it some more time to secure itself. This guy took just 5 minutes to nestle in.

Once secure, pick up the pot and place it into the rockwork near the top (these guys need good light). Make sure the pot cannot fall or rock from side to side. This will upset the BTA and it will promptly leave to find a more solid home.

The wait ten minutes for the tentacles to expand somewhat when the BTA has settled, and the pot is hidden from view, which would otherwise detract from the natural view of the reef we are looking for in all our marine tanks. In the final photo below, the tentacles are just starting to expand and the pot is almost hidden.

Just before lights out 30 minutes later, the BTA has fully expanded and no pot is evident.
He/She should feel very secure in its new home and not start out on a suicide mission to the nearest powerhead.

Think of it as when Gerry Daly met Jacques Cousteau!!!!

Kind regards

Seany

Cheers Pierce,

Remember it seems to only work for BTA. alot of others prefer the sandy bottom or in the case of H. magnifica to sit on the highest piece of LiveRock nearest the MH lights.
