Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

A Mods job is a thankless task I know speaking as a Mod on another forum, it's much more than a janitor and they don't get the recognition they deserve and quite often bare the brunt of jibes and vendettas because they have crossed a disgruntled member by putting them straight. You will always get knuckleheads trying to spoil things for others and not just in a fishkeeping sense.
I can't see no reason why all those good aquarists cant put pen to paper on a regular basis there are a myriad of topics on which to form an article. It's easy and I believe apathy reigns supreme and folks just cant be bothered. if the forum's to be a success then get of your asses and write something constructive, it dont matter what the subject matter is, it don't matter if its well written, it may well contain the holy grail that someone else has been searching for for eons.
No excuses....everyone is to blame.

I rarely post here because as i have told people months ago, I find a certain other forum more professional. If i have a serious question i get a serious reply. Like any Irish forum we like to joke and take the pi** but when i come on here i find it hard to get a thread worth reading.
Specially when people try to be funny with the title of the thread and i go into it only to see its about something completely different.

this is what i agree withwat arguing the point you put across does not meet your satisfaction? don't bring up the point so and don't lash people out of it for things you do yourself

The issue of the youtube videos was as a result of a complaint from another Forum member and could have been handled better
this is very true as deciding on how the society is run should not be down to a complaint from "another forum member"
and john i hope you don't see this as a personal attack as this is not my intention, i'm just pointing out wat i believe is unacceptable favouritism

social and rubbish should be via PM or a thread that doesn't leave serious questions at the bottom of the list and when talk like that gets into a fishy thread, moderators should be informed and act accordingly. this puts pressure on the moderators and i hope we can all appreciate the effort they put into the forum, especially the man responsible for this thread i am new here but see he tries his best to help everyone with anything he can
thanks johnh

Joey, I hope your post makes people realise that this is a fish forum and it is intended for people to help one another out.You are an example of a new member that we need to see in here and want to help. If you have any queries, continue to post them and hopefully in light of todays discussion we will see a more sensible and mature use of the forum from all members involved.
This topic was put up to make a point and it yet again decended into the usual 2 liner comments that have put people off coming on here. Lets not make it a "Us" and "them" situtation, but lets "ALL" work towards making the forum more user friendly, mainly fish related and encourage people to get back into the forum and contributing. I wait with baited breath to see if other members will show the maturity and sensibilty on their postings and hope we can all continue to enjoy this forum again.

This would scare any prospective Member think twice about becoming involved.
I think, because the way the Site is constructed, i.e latest post first, you get the Thread at it's tiredest or at a point where a question is already answered, would it make sense to have the Thread always show at it's beginning? Just a thought.

I know that the owner has plans to update it but I have no timeframe on that or details of the changes.
We have requested that the Social and Rubbish section does not get updated in the most recent posts list, but as yet that has not happened and may not be possible within what options there are under the hood of this software.
All suggestions for changes are welcome but pretty futile as our hands are technically tied.
This post is also a reply to the thread started by Puddlefish on Asthetics:

Beginneers shouldnt feel under pressure to post a question no matter how trival it may seem, that is how we all started and how we involve people in the forum. Yes we can remind them to do a search on the forum while also steering them in the right direction.
Also the article option would be a great idea as suggested by Sheag. Perhaps someone may draft up a list of articles we could do for beginners and perhaps assign or ask people if they would be willing to do an article on it. Colins articles are an example of how useful these can be and are certainly enjoyed by experienced and new members.

This post has certainly stirred up a lot of emotion – I had truthfully hoped it would have “dropped off the page” by now, indeed I am totally surprised how much attention it actually engendered!
I thank everybody who offered ‘votes of confidence’ (either publicly or by PM) – even though that wasn’t the purpose of the original post it’s nice to see how many people agree, some even only in part, with what I was trying to get across.
I have great affection for this Forum and, like Stretnik, I do not want to see it slowly descend out of existence. It’s far too important to Irish Fishkeeping for that to happen.
Here’s a suggestion (even though I know nothing about Facebook) could there not be a section set up in it, or the like, where all the non-serious subjects could be aired (as are now in our ‘Social and Rubbish’ section) and great craic and merriment could be had by all participants, leaving them then to return to the Forum afterwards to make more serious Fishkeeping posts here – because, believe me, many have very valid points to make and help to offer.
I just re-checked the Forum and see more comments - some of which have been ably answered by Daragh Owens.
I don’t know what form the proposed upgrade will take and whether or not it will be able to ‘take on’ some of the proposals made today so these will have to wait for the future.
Lastly to Dioza, I have been sending a PM to all new members welcoming them to the Forum and inviting them to contribute to the ‘Introductions/About Me’ category in order for the proverbial ‘Ice’ to be broken and to allow the rest of us to get to know the new member…I don’t see why this ‘welcome’ cannot add a pointer to the ‘Beginner’s Section’ as well. Good suggestion, thanks. I’ll get onto that presently.
Even more lastly to Darren Curry – the job of Administrator entails, among many other things, checking every officially presented complaint and acting upon it if deemed necessary. I’ve held my hands up and said that I might have handled this one better and have sorted it out personally with the member concerned – even though it was intended as a general statement for everyone, not merely him – so no, there was no favouritism there at all.
One very very last thing – people with spelling difficulties are welcome here – text abbreviations less so.
(Once again, these are observations from JohnH the Forum member, not the Administrator).
John
Ps to Seamus – message understood and point taken…you’re off my Christmas Card list (at least you would be – if I actually sent any!).
