Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

March 2012 ITFS Table Show & meeting

More

The meeting in March is coming up in a few weeks on Tuesday March 13th and this time we are having a table show, open to all classes of fish and we'll even do a breeders teams section - especially as the "Breeding Tropicals" section has been getting busy lately.

Maybe we could even auction the entrants if the fish-keepers were interested - let me know what you think ...

Anyone can bring their fish along, we have show tanks of all sizes so you don't have to worry about bringing one of your own. Ahead of the night all we need to know is the name of the fish and the approximate size so we can ensure a suitable tank is available for you, so you can PM me with those details.

On the night itself bring as much water from the tank the fish came from, if you can't bring your own water please let us know well in advance.

At the last table show Daragh Owens and Ian Millichip kindly uploaded some video and photos so feel free to bring your camera. It's great to hear why the judges reckon a rummynose tetra is comparable to a Red Emperor and how they score - after all it's not a beauty competition it's a standards comp.

While the judges are scoring and marking up we can have our usual catch-up on all things aquatic and plans for the future.

Hi Ian

I was talking with one of the judges and we would apply the ruling that:

Breeders Classes must be teams of four fish not more than fourteen months old on the day of the Show. Date of birth must be shown on the entry notes, and the fish must have been bred by the exhibitor. Of course as the table show is being facilitated on the club meeting night - we will take approximate dates of birth, e.g. "circa beginning of November 2011".

My recently hatched (Tuesday 29 Feb - so they're Leap Year fry !) Cory Sterba will thus have to stay at home but I'm sure I've got others identified

We are hoping to re start the breeders award scheme to encourage good fishkeeping practice. Also hopefully to give some attention to people who breed some of the more unusual species.
Any fish brought along on tues will be marked up and included in the award scheme.
We have run several different breeding award schemes over the years and we are hoping to organise to incorporate the best bits of these into the new competition. We are hoping to have a breeder of the year award plus more advanced bronze, silver and gold awards and certification.
I will post up full details of the scheme after further discussion with the ITFS commitee.

I have a few more photos and videos of entrants, but have not had the time to process them yet.

Some very nice fish on show.

Congratulations to John and Justine for taking the top 3 places.

It was also very good to see a Nothobranchius doing rather well this year as well as last year. :)

Yes indeed it is great to see some killifish being entered and especially performing so well - it's strange how they are so often overlooked when they're not all that tricky to maintain, grow quickly and are enthusiastic breeders - I'd love to see some more in the sponsors shops. As regards the Rubripinnis it is especially great to see a fine specimen given that it is on the IUCN endangered list due to habitat threat - I hope John has plans to breed in train :)
