Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Next meeting is the 2nd Tuesday in September, that's the 14th @ 8.30 PM upstairs in Rosie O'Grady's Harolds Cross.

Prizes have been very kindly sponsored by Fins, Fur & Feathers - thanks Gavin.

So get you thinking caps on and dusty off your favourite fish and bring it on an outing.

Looking forward to tonight, gotta remember to bring some extra tank water for my entries, once I catch them of course

Who is doing the Magnus/Bamber tonight? I'll bring along a load of pens for the quiz entries.

Thanks Gavin & Fins, Fur & Feathers for donating the prizes - any chance you could come along for the awards ceremony ?

Andrew

so lads how did it go? i really am gonna try make the next one, although i'm in the game 5ish years i know very little and i'd really enjoy learning, just hope you's don't mind me sitting back and taking in the info without adding much if any at all as i'm sure i would not have much to offer. but i hope you's all had a great time.

i know some might be shy but a few photos of the meeting would go down a treat and put names to faces for people who cant make it, might be an ice breaker and encourage a few more to participate. just a thought

In essence - A great night, plenty of show entries, judges comments were very informative, an entertaining quiz, the all important raffle and another great attendance from forum members, non forum members, club members, new club members and non club members (hopefully they will join in the future).

Apologies for not taking photos, it was in the plan, but we forgot and only remembered when it was time to pack up and debench which was quite late. Overall the table show had 13 entries from 6 different fish keepers (Andrew, Daragh Owens, Goldy, John Gannon, Petemax & Platty252) and covered most classes you would find at a full show; tetras, coldwater, gouramis, catfish, cichlids and killifish (egg laying tooth carps). The quality of fish was outstanding and whilst the quiz was happening the judges got on with the job at hand in looking at how to score points for deportment, finnage etc. Once the results were compiled the senior judge Derek Doyle went through each entry and commented on each fish, this was a great help in understanding why some fish score well and why others fail to perform so well (nervous fish that lose their colour, gravid females, fish partial to having their fins nipped etc). So the podium finishers were (maybe they have photos of their own that can be uploaded to this post !! ):

Daragh Owens - Hypancistrus sp L333 www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=1024
Platty252 - Panaque sp L169 www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/species.php?species_id=158
John Gannon - Red Empress Cichlid - Protomelas Taeniolatus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protomelas_taeniolatus
Platty 252 - Nothobranchius Palmqvisti www.killi.co.uk/SpeciesDetails.php?ID=473

A special thanks to the judges for attending and making the time for the show: Darren Dalton, Derek Doyle, Adrian Dragos, Phil Kearney, Daragh Owens & Dave Walters.

The quiz was one by Acara (Dave Walters) with an impressive 25 out of 26. If you want me to post some samples of the questions let me know.

The main raffle prize (an internal eheim filter) was won by Brendan Keenan.

Special thanks for John Gannon for bringing lots of show tanks with him and to Gavin & Fins, Fur & Feathers for donating the prizes for the night. Thanks to JohnH for compiling the quiz (unfortunately the rumour did not ring true, maybe next month John !!)

Yes it was a good turn out by fish and fish keepers last night.

Thanks to Johnh for the quiz, I didn't have to show my ignorance as I was busy judging :-)

Thanks to Gavin in Fins Fur & Feathers for sponsoring the Quiz and table show prizes and I John Gannon will fill in the details of the sponsor of the Eheim filter prize for the raffle.

Unfortunately our usual room was under decoration (by a painter with dubious skills) so we were a bit cramped in the outer room and could have done with a bit more light, but that aside it was a great night. Great to see some new faces again this month, unfortunately I didn't get to talk to them for very long... next time.

I brought the camera and found it when packing up to go home!

I don't have a recent photo of the L333, here is one from over 3 years ago, not even sure it is the same fish as I have a few:

it was a good turnout for the table show and the l333 was a worthy winner. the following night darren(platy) and myself also attended the lfks annual freshwater table show to assist with judging, this was won by kens's mighty tropheops. what struck me was the overall high standard of the fish at both venues and the care taken to present the exhibits.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish
