Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

May ITFS meeting Tuesday 10th

Tuesday 10th May 2011, from 8.30 pm at Rosey O'Gradys pub in Harolds Cross (upstairs room)

We are very pleased to have Daragh Owens make a return trip to our club night as a presenter, his last trip in August 2010 about Corydoradinae was hugely informative.

This time Daragh will be talking about fish from " behind the lens" in his presentation about photography. I know this is something that will prove very popular, not only has Daragh provided us with some outstanding photo and video in our forum thread "Photos and Video" but we all would like to see how we can present our fish in the best possible way to other enthusiasts.

So I'd say we should all bring along a paper and pen and get ready for some serious note-taking.

This should prove to be another very interesting night. Meeting starts from 8.30.

Regards
Andrew

Judging by the emails and PMs I have received this looks like a popular meeting next week, hope y'all can make it.

Maybe JohnH can be tempted to make the trip

Oh what have I let myself in for!!

Hopefully Johnh can make it, he is a much more experienced photographer than I am.

Anyone that wants suggestions on using their camera, please bring it along, much easier to work with the camera in hand.

Not sure how anyone in the vicinity could miss this...Photocompetition aspirants please make a note of the date (even though this might mean I continue to get 'nil points' if I don't go).

Andrew, I just wanted to stress that eveybody is welcome to this and other meetings - members or not.

Maybe you could give a talk on the use and meaning of emoticons on a modern forum, incorporating "replacing exclamation marks with something more colourful" as a side topic!!!!!!

I started using them to disguise the fact that most of my comments are absolute drivel.
Obviously it has worked !

Anyway, let's not allow this very important post get lost in banter...

Meeting next Tuesday at Rosey's - with a much anticipated talk from Daragh Owens on Fish photography.

Well worth the trip for members and non-members alike.

Bring your camera along - as Daragh suggests.

I'll fetch my Kodak Brownie box camera if I can make it

For you...................

No!

But do go - and fetch your camera, you know - the one you're always slagging for not being 'very good' (or words to that effect).
Perhaps the talk might convince you it's not the camera at fault but - God forbid...the operator.

Has everyone else (other than Andrew and John G) got their batteries charged ready for the 'lecture' (only joking) tomorrow night?

This really promises to be a great evening's meeting.

All that would be missing would be some old plonker telling you how to get 'no points' in the Forum's Photo Competitions! - Wait a minute - I could do that!!!

If this post looks like I'm bumping this thread......then.....yes it is (for those sat down to a TV dinner after forgetting about the meeting).

For those who'd like to enter the various competitions....then a few hours to give some insight to winning sponsors goodies isn't bad either. :)

See you all later.

I didn't see anyone yawn, so you were either very discreet or I didn't bore that rear ends off you all.

Hats must go off to our beloved Chairman John Gannon who has put so much effort into arranging and cajoling people into doing various presentations, I think it is his turn now, he deserves his moment in the spot-light.

Can't wait.

I, for one, was 'glued to the screen' (not literally).
For anyone who missed it - you really did miss a very excellent talk - and to think I taught him all he knows!
I can't wait for the next Photocomp, I am willing to bet that with all my new-found photographic knowledge I will double me score in the voting (to two).

Great evening, I'm glad I came, even though my (now ancient) satnav couldn't find Rosy's - thanks to Andrew I got there with minutes to spare (I really could write a book, you know...).

For those who didn't go.....Darragh gave some really great hints and tips.

I thought our @Dar was going to turn up for some reason (there must have been a hint in a post I saw)......he may have been there, I don't know as I wouldn't recognise him anyway.

And I'll double second the pressure on John Gannon to give a talk.

the meeting sounds like it was a great night and a cool talk by Daragh too, who in My mind is like "Yoda" with that camera of His, His photos / videos are really great, super clear and NOT souped up with this photo shop non-sense...
I had fully intended to go to this meeting but had to give it a miss due to getting a nights work (typical bad timing at its best but I couldn't turn down the nights work as money is a bit scarce lately...)
it's a pity as it would have been the first meeting for Me to attend and Daraghs talk offered great incentive...

ah well, life goes on...

I'll definitely make the effort to go to the next one as I truly am disappointed to have missed the talk and the meeting...

thanks for a great presentation and talk daragh. i learned loads and it was good to have some photographic mysterys explained in layman terms, rather than having to trawl through 200 pages of jargon.
it was good to see a good attendance and we even had a suprise and welcome visitor from tip.

Seeing as the video competition is having a bit of a slow start.... remember that (as covered the other night) most digital cameras can produce excellent video clips as well, so you have no excuse!

Here are a few clips from a small marine tank (don't start with ban the bowl - it's over 100 litres!)

Hi Andrew, at 2:00 the little tiny black and white lad? He is a tiny mantis shrimp, better footage of him here:

He is tiny, that hole is about 2mm across.

The crab at 2:15 is a hermit of some kind, though not the usual ones, he has branched antennae that I have not seen on hermits before. There is a normal hermit beside him later in the video and you can see the difference.
