Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I think it would be a good idea with cash tight at the moment people that want to shift some stuff could swap or p/x for other things and also give stuff away if there feeling really genorous ;-)

I think people give away and offer stuff for trade in the for sale and wanted section any way mate

but on the other hand a swap section might be a good idea say people who have tang set ups wanting say a planted tank might swap fish for co2 substrate and plants

could get messy also

But some thing for admin to think about

As FishMad says, it could get messy....but then it is not 'for sale' and it is not 'wanted': so a special section might be worth having as a middle ground.

So long as the swap is not 'swap my angels for 20 euro notes'

Agree it would be a good idea. Rules to include no mention of cash- exchange only for other items. would be happy to put bits up on it. seen it on other sites and lots of people seem to be happy. Spreads the love and allows cash hungary people to get things they need

Its a good idea. Maybe could be run as a trial for such a time to gauge the response.

Sorry I didn't reply on this one any earlier ...was gone AWOL for the weekend !

I am going to set up now a new "Swap" category along with the "For Sale" and "Wanted" categories where people can post their bartering requests and we can see how it goes.

Thanks - Valerie

From my point of view, this will only turn off(even more) the 'real' experts of the forum, notably Derek, JohnH and Platy. A disaster of a suggestion.

I think it's a great thing and I don't understand how it's going to turn off the 3 members,I love u to explain and is the forum here to keep these 3 members happy?

It's not so much trying to keep them happy, it's a respect sort of a thing - I just mentioned them as an example, not as a matter of fact.

But Dave; as stated above; in times like this; if one member has a fish related item he want to dispose off and cant afford to buy another item; surely it makes sense to swap? Likewise also for items such as filters; if someone want s a size up and the other size down? Or different batches of fry?

Just asking as you have suddenly just came in and said its a disaster of a suggestion and quoted names...

regards;
andrew

I dont see how this suggestion could in any way disrespect anyone who uses this forum regardless of wether the majority consider them experts or not. This sounds like an idea worth trying at least.
