Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Important Announcement on EU Legislation

The Herpetological Society or Ireland (H.S.I.) recently made the following Public Announcement on various internet forums.:

It should be noted that this dialogue pertains to any animal species that may be termed Exotic (beit reptile, amphibian, fish).

The Senior Scientific Officer of the Herpetological Society of Ireland is directly co-ordinating communication with the appropriate bodies cited below ahead of the face-to-face public consultation.

“.........In response to concerns raised in the wake of speculation following the announcement of this EU consultation the H.S.I has been in talks with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Invasive Species Ireland over the past two week.

The NPWS have agreed to facilitate a face-to-face dialogue, via the H.S.I, with those concerned about this issue. In particular, NPWS encourage the participation of shop owners and traders who deal in exotic animals to attend or at the very least use the H.S.I as a facilitator to voice their opinions.

The new EU Invasive Alien Species legislation coupled with the implementation of the EU Bird and Habitats Directive will undoubtedly have effects on exotics trade.

Changes to what and how exotic species can be imported and sold is almost certain. However, the extent of this is still unknown.
It is important to also realise that these change will not happen overnight.

These legislations will not affect the future or survival of the exotics trade in Ireland but they will result in changes to the current situation.

The Herpetological Society of Ireland has spent the past two week in discussion for the benefit of all involved in the exotics trade whether they are H.S.I. members of the or not.

Any dialogue with a governmental body will be facilitated by the H.S.I. and, as such, our members and their concerns will be prioritised.

Again, our strength lies in our membership base, the more members we have the better equipped we are to represent herpetology in all it's shapes and forms on the island of Ireland.....”

A more direct invitation was sent to Members of the H.S.I.

www.thehsi.org/?p=282

“Dear member,
You may be aware that on the 27/1/2012 the EU launched a public consultation on new draft legislation on how best to combat Invasive Alien Species within Europe (viewable at ec.europa.eu/environment/consultations/invasive_aliens.htm)

In response to concerns raised by members in the wake of speculation following the announcement of this consultation the H.S.I has been in talks with the National Parks and Wildlife Service and Invasive Species Ireland over the last five days.

The H.S.I has informed these governmental institutions of the worries exotic keepers and traders have in relation this proposed new legislation and how it may affect their hobby and businesses.

In turn, the NPWS have agreed to facilitate a face to face dialogue, via the H.S.I, with those concerned about this issue.
In particular, NPWS encourage the participation of shop owners and traders who deal in exotic animals to attend or at the very least use the H.S.I as a facilitator to voice their opinions.

The EU legislation will undoubtedly have effects on exotics trade but it does not mean it will affect the future or survival of the exotics trade in Ireland.

I would also like this opportunity to highlight that new EU Birds and Habitats Directive(EU-BHD) is due to come into effect in Ireland later in 2012. (viewable here ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/legislat...rective/index_en.htm).
The EU-BHD will also have implications for the exotics industry as a whole although their effect on the herpetoculture industry is likely to be minimal.

If you would like to attend a dialogue with the NPWS please get in contact.
Also, if you have any concerns about the EU Invasive Alien Species consultation or the Birds and Habitats Directive then please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

Kind regards,

Rob Gandola
