Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I was looking in the window of a closed down shop in malahide today and noticed a fish tank. There is a large, vibrant blue fish swimming around...there were other, smaller fish dead at the bottom of the tank. The water looked very dirty. The shop is gutted so it doesn't look like anyone is maintaining the tank. The shop is called Sharkey's Cuts for Kids and it's at the end of the marina in malahide, beside crusoe restaurant and curves gym.

A friend told me about this site so I thought someone on here might be able to help. I saw the fish at 5pm today (sun 6th may) so hopefully it's still alive. There may be more as it's a big tank.

Hi Everyone.

We were notified of this post and have been on touch with the Sharky's people as we initially installed this tank for them.

We have offered to take back the fish and have been told we can get access tomorrow so we will be making sire that we can save what can be saved.

We have asked to get access today but it is not possible

Thanks Jmurray123 for letting this be known as it could have been a disaster for the fish otherwise - Let hope that things have not gone to bad by tomorrow.

Will keep you posted once we have been to the site tot let you know what has happened.

That's great news..I hope you get to them on time; would love to know how you get on if you could let us know?

The place is definitely shut down: notice on windows, all fittings gutted, place empty.

That is very good work lads/ladies.
Not only do we need the fish to be helped, but we also do not want others condemning responsible fish keepers.

I got word about a year ago that a niger trigger I once kept ended up in a glitzy hairdressers in Malahide. Supposed to have been housed with bamboo sharks and the likes after the guy I sold it to got rid. Hope this is not the place. It makes you think of the knock on effect bad husbandry has on any fish you need to rehome if you yourself are unable to keep them properly. There might be a lesson in there somewhere...

Nice to see some lads still give a damn. Well spotted.

Was out there today had a look, marine tank looks like regal tang swimming round, 2 dead clown fish. Real pity about it, lovely looking set-up. Nobody held to blame for neglect.

Hi Everyone.

Was out myself yesterday to get to the tank - we could not get access any earlier. We got a Regal Tang rescued. There was 2 X clown fish and a yellow tang that could not deal with the cold temperature. What had happened was the tenant moved out and wanted to sell the tank. As the electricity was cut off and no deal was done the tank went into decline.

It is unfortunate that there were 3 losses of fish. The tang (and a few crabs) did not mind the cold Irish weather for a short spell.

This tank is as far as I understand available for sale and I am sure any reasonable offers would be accepted. If anyone is seriously interested I can get you in touch with the previous tenant who needs to move this tank. pm me for more detail. New cabinet will be needed as this one was made from plywood and due to no ventilation it has deteriorated. but here is good equipment (36W UV, Deltec TC 2060, etc.) and a massive nice tank, Now empty and ready for a new home.

OK I have talked to the owner of the tank and he has asked for people to contact him by email

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Here is what is available -

Sharkey's Mega Marine Aquarium

approx Aquarium size: 2 meters X 900 high X 1 meter deep

Equipment:
4 X 80W T5 via Arcardia remote ballast
Deltec TC 2060 Protein Skimmer
JBL 36W UV sterliser and feed pump
Aquamedic 6500 Return pump
2 X 300W JBLHeaters
2 X Korlia 7 wave makers

All pre- plumbed into the sump located to the side of the aquarium with sock pre filters
Additional filter media & Auto top-up section built into the sump

This unique custom built aquarium from Seahorse Aquariums is situated in a shop as a main display. This Aquarium is also a counter top and all equipment is hidden away in cupboards. Due to excessive moisture and bad ventilation as well as a onsite build for the cabinet - I would assume that this will not survive getting pulled apart so a new stand would be required.

I think the owner has a nerve trying to sell on his 'death tank'. Don't know how anyone could just turn the key and walk away like that.

Thanks for rescuing the blue one.
