Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The Government intend fracking in the West of Ireland and are trying to convince the Irish People that it is safe, they will dangle the $$ signs to hoodwink this poor nation into believing that it is good for our Finances and Ireland.... it isn't, the material, mainly Gas, will probably be extracted by a non-national Company and after the spoils are taken, the Irish nation will, once again be left to pay for the clean up... please take interest in what's coming...

Hi Kev,

did not get to reply to your original post on this, but I did file a signature on the petition. Also passed on to a lot of people i know from potentially affected areas of the country.

Your point about the revenues from the natural resources of this little island are perfectly valid. Unfortunately it seems the case that our wonderful government, whatever party they are from, are hell ben on short term gains and to dont cast a thought to the long term consequences.
The Corrib gas field comes to mind :(

Cheers,

Bill.

Thanks Bill,

The obvious lack of responses is indicative of the mindset of people today.

The Govt here in Canada are not saying much about Fracking locally but a Geologist here said it is on the Cards . The me me me attitude of the masses let's Governments do whatever they like, I was reading recently that many respected economists were saying Irish people have the worst record on opposition and demonstration, we just let the powers do what they want, we take shafting as a right of passage but dare you sit on your neighbours Wall or cut a piece from an overhanging Branch and you risk being throttled within an inch of your Life.

Defenders of the Environment tend to be labelled as whacky liberals or flower power People. Why do we tend to be indifferent to these things? We are great at the instant..." what? They are going to charge us for Water?" "It's been pissing Rain for Months! " kind of reaction but it always returns to the " ah sure what can we do about it?" Attitude. It's weird, Oil prices keep rising, Patrol and Diesel are being consumed at a phenomenal rate and yet, no one is asking, how much is actually left, we are at a point where the maximum available has been reached and supplies are diminishing at a steady rate, the easy methods like drilling are no longer as lucrative and other very damaging methods are being used.

In Canada, the people who own their Houses only own their Houses, unlike Ireland, that which is found beneath your Home belongs to the Government, you own the conceived area above but all exploration and mineral rights remain the property of the Canadian Government A man here whose land contained vast amounts of Diatomaceous Earth is fighting the lawful extraction of same from his legally owned property. There are worldwide forces at play and it would appear we are powerless to stop it.

Why would a Government be able to ignore rational thinking and sell off necessary resources as Corrib Gas or the Canadian Oil Sands or massive tracts of Virgin Forests in New Zealand to the Japanese? I just don't get it.

Kev.

Kev,i agree with a lot that is said here but as is always my opinion, writing words online solves nothing!! The internet is a great tool for information i agree but what the hell has ever being changed for the better by people talking and protesting online?? People are going around saying 'the new way of protest is online',what? are you all insane?..Do you really think anybody from a government minister to someone in local authority gives a shit about what people are saying on forums? The big fat answer to that is NO!!! Put down your key boards and put on your thermo socks and head to the streets in numbers....If you dont get a resolution (as with Corrib) you have at least got some exposure and that is at least a platform for future protest.......Signing a petition online,i'm sorry but is not a platform!!

I agree to a degree, the Internet is a great way of gathering like-minded people together quickly , I think Emailing petitions is a waste of Time, it needs to be delivered, in Person after a physical demonstration.
