Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Joe,
This has been moved to General Nature and Conservation section as it's more appropriate there.

Seen this on the OATA facebook page. They are trying to get the word out on facebook and twitter using #handsoffmyhobby and BCA forum. Could be worth sharing to get more awareness out there among fish keepers.

Cant believe their hasnt been more reaction to this thread. Under section 4 of this manifesto it states to impose a ban on wild caught species and to restrict the number of exotic species entering the EU. So in effect even goldfish will be restricted as they are not native to Europe.

if brought into law it will spell disaster because of how easy it will be to classify species as covered.
a starting point for people would be to mail their eu wanabees asking them not to sign it
then attack them at the door, have your questions at the ready
a very good thing to do would be to get the two existing vote grabbers to remove their names from the proposal. so if anyone knows them or their sidekicks tell them what you think... I sort of doubt that either of them really read or understood the implications of the proposal, they just signed because ' people like animals and they may grab a vote here or there

Joe what kind of questions should we be asking them when they arrive at the doors.you know how I love a good 'discussion' with these people as most do not understand half the campaigns they are pushing.

Maybe parts of the trade needs to be investigated and perhaps regulated but this just sounds like it has not been thought thru at all.

It would be interesting to hear about how this is intended to be enforced in practice as well as the criteria of a potentiall black/white list.

It will probably be like the bird ban that was imposed in I think 2007. A blanket ban on all bird imports from outside of Europe. This then raised the prices (wholesale and retail) and impacted on the trade no end. Hopefully ghe politicians will see the light and oppose the manifesto as if not this will cause further hardship in an already stuggling pet trade.

I that was to happen I would guess that smuggling of exotic animals would sky rocket, hence worsening travel conditions for those animals.

In all fairness, the Fish trade is of little or no interest to the politicians, they will want to be seen to be siding with the people who can give them the most votes. There are far more 'animal lovers' than fishkeepers (not that most of us have anything but animal welfare at heart) so that's who, in their eyes, they'll need to try to appeal to.

Once they've secured the votes they'll be back cuddling up to the 'animal-loving' farming community.

Well, that's what I think, anyway.

Exactly alot of parrots and high value birds are smuggled into Europe from Africa and Asia through Turkey and some Eastern European countries.

But can we as fish keepers allow the hobby to all but vanish without making some type of stand against it?

Not at all, I was merely trying to give my opinion as to why the politicians will be inclined to vote for this.
