Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there, i'm planning on coming through to the shop this weekend, Bill agreed to bring me allong if he goes through, my question is, if i bring a water sample with can i have it tested by some one at the shop, because my trust in the JBL STRIPS I bought from has diminished because they seem to be displaying the same no matter what water i put them in, my point is i would like to compare results to confirm that the strips are working or not, your help in this regard would be appreciated.

I would recommend you bring at least a half a litre from each tank.
If a water sample is too small it may have changed it's reading during transport and movement.

The more expert guys on the forum can advise on this.

Make sure you don't add any ammonia lockers or conditioners to your tank and don't do a water change on the day of your test, you'll get a false reading.

Thanks for the words everyone.

Yes please bring in your water samples and we will give them the full suit of tests at no charge. The JBL strips are no very accurate - well no strips are accurate - they are only a guide to let you see what the water is like. If you bring in more water then we should be able to test for the lot.

Look forward to meeting with you over the weekend.

@ Kev, yeah in hindsight that response was a little vague, however, what i meant was i have a shopping list and the better part of €100 to spend.

@ Sean, i plan on getting a propper test kit but not sure i need the master one as i already have an ammonia test kit which does work, but i'll see whats on offer

My shopping list, depending on test results(*)

1) 4x rams (2x fem, 2x male), ramerezi (unless otherwise advised)*
2) new substrate/sand/gravel*
3) spong filter connection for jewel400 pumpset, other accesories needed to achieve goals
4) thermometer
5) Testkit
6) peat (as advised for keeping rams) and other medicines and treatments necessary.

Well i had a great afternoon, Bill and i went to Seahorse today, I had the pleasure of meeting some of the guys there, its really a great place, so thanks to the guys at Seahorse for doing the test for me as well as all the great advice and the great Service, and of course a big shout out to my wing man Bill.

Both tanks are starting to come together, the Convicts have been moved to the 200 ltr tank, and managed to get a pair of german blue rams an a pair of golden rams for the 100 ltr tank, plans are to add a small group of dorry's, and a small school of neons but those will come later.

As of now i'm no a hundred percent done, but as soon as i am i'll post pictures.

Once again thanks to Bill and the guys from Seahorse, and to all of you for the great advice.

To all the Guys on the forum, I know there are times when tempers flare and opinions become more important than content but every single person I have had the good fortune to meet since I got involved in the Forum have been great people, it's a pity the Female side is so few number-wise, I only got to meet two, Valarie and Katherine, both lovely People.

It's great to see the extra members that have signed up recently and long may it continue and once again, as has been said before , thanks to Darragh Sherwin for keeping the Forum alive and kicking.

Kev.
