Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi is anyone out there having trouble with the seahorse aquariums website? I cant access any of the marine secyions I keep getting redirected to the homepage, so if theres anyone there from seahorse is it just me and my out of date laptop or are you doing work on the site at the moment?
Thanks

You are not the only one. I believe they are constantly updating their website. I see it very dodgy on my web browser or not responsive.

cheers

Same here, just annoying to use, ended up giving up and getting my 1200mm tubes and sundries elsewhere as it is a bit of a wee journey for me to Turnpke rd without a car.

@giunceris

I thought I was the only ordered there:)) glad to hear some other people ordered too.

but you know when they "in stock" it's actually not in stock and you can wait for like 2 weeks to it delivered.

out of interest. Much of the descriptions put in for fish and corals are look like copied and pasted over from www.liveaquaria.com

How can you give it an A+++ without using the whole site? You mean the fish section works, well that is no use to me as I dont order fish online, it is a cruel practise to ship fish around, am surprised Seahorse do it

Site looks good but functionally it is awful, it is one thing updating it and quite another when it just doesn't work like it should, the update is not causing the issues as an update should fix said issues, it is broken plain and simple, well as of 17th, havent checked today. I spent 20 minutes trying to get into T5 lights, Leds link worked and then did not after I first accessed it, so there is problems with the site most definately.

Whats wrong with building a site testing it and going live? instead of putting up a half azzed site and fixing it as you go along

hmm strange carry on , online stores should never be beta tested when live, guess theres always a rush to get it out there.

having said that try Firefox, you'd be surprised how bad IE is thesedays and not necessarilly the site's fault.

Just got to ask how do you think the fish get to the shops in the first place?

Hi there,

There should be an improvement in the web as of today and will be up to speed over the next few days as there are issues as to which explorer you use.
The site is a complete rebuild and as such is linked to a back office and till system which makes it all very complicated. I am no expert in these areas but we have been assured that the only way to get it working because of the complexities is to get it live and iron out the mistakes over the first couple of weeks. We are getting a huge response to it abroad which has amazed us and in particular in Poland where we are getting a savage amount of hits / day for some crazy reason.

Re shipping live stock.
Shipping fish is something we have done for over 12 years both in Dublin and down west. It is something we have researched extensively and we take a lot of pride in our techniques. We have shipped fish (mainly seahorses) to every continent in the world and most European countries. All fish are shipped in accordance with the Marine Aquariums Council and OATA guidelines.

We ship livestock on a daily basis (weather permitting) and thus far we have had nothing but happy customers, we will have a testimonial section on the web over the next few days. A recent observation is that 92% of customers who have ordered livestock online have reordered which is obviously a very positive sign as to their satisfaction.

Fish are received to Seahorse Aquariums on a weekly basis. They are acclimated and quarantined in a detailed procedure which is partially explained on our web site. They are only sent out when they are fully quarantined and we are satisfied with the quality.
a. The fish are shipped in insulated fish boxes with a cardboard outer, these boxes are preheated under heat lamps.
b. The fish are packed in double bags with one third water and two thirds oxygen.
c. Two heat packs are used / box along with two hot water bottles in colder weather.
d.One fish is only shipped / large bag and the bags are rounded so no fish gets stuck in the corners.
e. The outer and inner box are both taped to avoid heat loss.
f. The bags are covered in paper and bubble wrap.
g. The shipment is only sent when temperatures are high enough. This is why someone may have had to wait for a shipment or alternatively if we are not happy with the quality.

Any questions on the above or any issues at all - never hesitate to give me a buzz.

Needless to say no shipments this week with the weather…. Remember to check tank temperatures as several people have been on with temperature problems.

Many thanks,

Kealan

Darragh, that is my opinion, they get shipped exactly and then they get shipped again. Great.

Look all, it is not a good practise for the fish, it is a financial thing lets be honest, Keelan, never said you had mistreated fish or that you have had unhappy customers.

I gave an opinion, and you all have yours, I just dont appreciate Darraghs silly question as he seems to take it personally for some reason when he knows better (I obviously know the answer to this sarcastic question). I think Seahorse are more than well equipped to defend themselve IF they need to, with the rep they have there is really no need, buts let not skip around the fact that reshipping fish especially without a timeout period in QT at least is a bit much. How much are they shipped before they get to any given LFS

semi off-topic, it could actualy be the server/vps that their site is hosted on that can cause the ecomm suite to be slow, these can be resourse heavy.
seriously do yourselves a big favour and install/use Firefox and try to banish IE to the abyss.

Duuude, 7 is less than half the speed of my connction, regardless even 1.5 Mb is still plenty to use a website.
