Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nice looking fsh, but are you not concerned that the honey gouramis may be viewed as food by the bircher?

I used to have a 7" Bichir and he ignored my 2-3" blackirt tetra's which were the smallest in the tank.... had him for years no problem.

This guy is tiny so he shouldnt be a problem with the honey gourami's. Keeping Bichir's well fed and not feeding them live food also helps.

I dont plan on keeping him with the honey's forever.. will be upgrading the tank next year when he is larger, Ill try find a cheap 150-200L.

The Polypterus are really great fish, and the honey gourami are also great (littler) fish ;)

Although they can be gentle giants, I would have problems trusting them if they think that something can fit its mouth (even if well fed)

The Polypterus would tend to target certain types of fish in priority order. The habits of honey gourami may make it particularly high on the list of fish to swipe at.

Anyway, nice videos. I like honey gouramis (one of the best fish around to be quite honest), and Polypterus are always a great monster fish to have.....a monster fish posing the least problems to a keeper (apart from having a greedy smile and the Houdini lightening fast escape skills!!)

I think i got a better tank mate for him.... apistogramma hongsloi  ! I was going to get an 'agazzi' but i decided to fork out the extra tenner for the hongsloi :)! really nice fish.

I will move the honey's to my other tank when the bichir gets bigger. Thanks for the advice.

Hi hongsloi are very nice dwarfs but i feel you may have the same problem only a more expensive meal as they get a similar size to the honeys :( but as your bichir is still small i feel it would be ok fir a while.. hes gonna get 12" and his head will get as big as your thumb.. andi n my opinion well able to eat an Apisto.. unfortunatly

I dont plan on keeping him with the honey's forever.. will be upgrading the tank next year when he is larger, Ill try find a cheap 150-200L.

:P

I probably should of made it clearer that this is only a temporary tank. Once he hits 6-7" im going get a larger tank for him and those guys will remain in this one.

I figured those guys will be fine till then because i used to have a 6-7" Bichir with similar sized fish.

He used to follow my clown loach around all day and snuggle up under her when she was layin on her side like clowns do.
