Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I said I was going to do this a while back and I finally got around to it. It's just a 18L tank with leaves (catappa and beech), river gravel and a little Java fern. Overnight the water has turned tea coloured

Nice little tank! Are u just using a sponge filter? I've a spare 18 liter here too was planning on using it for something but there is no light that's my only problem! It's just sitting on a windowsill in my conservatory so could get natural light.

There's a 9W Blau light on this, but I only plan on having it on late in the evening when I'm at my desk. It's near a north facing window and it only has java fern in it, so light isn't needed really. The leaves have already turned the water darker since last night. There's no heater (my study stays at a pretty constant temp) just a small sponge filter running in it, so it costs next to nothing to run. I'd say go for it; the only reservation I'd have is algae and temperature control issues in a conservatory.

Yeah your right about temp increase/ decrease. My 60 liter has gone up 2 degrees before.

Well I just cracked my 18 liter so that idea goes out the window! I was trying to take the bottom surround off which was siliconed and it ended up cracking the glass in the corner!

You could probably get it replaced and resealed pretty cheaply

I normally soak the leaves for 3 days prior to use. They don't leak as much then. Your tank looks great

Nice pics! Don't think I could be bothered getting it fixed. It was 1 of those kids ones with the blue surround. Not my kind of thing but just had it lying here.

Cheers. I have to say, I'm a big fan of the tinted water. Makes it look more natural to me
