Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

And that's why the call 'em mudskippers...

I don't usually name fish... but this guy is a Jedi master. Uses the force, he does.

I should clarify that I rigged up a branch above the water for the archers to shoot crickets from, thereby placing them out of the reach of the mudskippers. So much for that theory!

Great video. Obviously they are doing that quite a lot now, or you are very patient with a camera!
Hope you have a lid on that tank!!!
Thanks for posting It.

That was some leap. Its a class shot of the tank with the mudskipper just above the water line with the archers swimming underneath. A job well done fair play

Thanks. I took my time placing the rock work and broken lines of sight above the water for the mudskippers while trying to keep as much space below the water for the archerfish. There's a few tweaks to be made, but overall I'm pretty happy with it.
It's a leap of just over a foot and he did it with great precision. Picked the cricket right off the branch. I always thought cichlids were smart fish but these guys are practically Greek philosophers by comparison. You can almost see them assessing any given situation.

Actually this might be payback. There seems to be shenanigans going on no matter where I put the food. The archerfish have tried to shoot food off the rocks that I intended for the mudskippers, practically beached themselves and have even snatched bloodworms right from the mudskippers' mouths.

So what are the dimensions of the tank? I've got the measuring tape out, if you get bored with this set up I'm making the trip.

Hmmm come to think of it I promised the kids a trip to Dublin zoo, will your place be empty any night for a little burglary

It's just a Juwel Vision180. About 32 inches long, 14-16 inches deep and 18 inches high, though the water depth is only about 8 inches. Not a big tank at all. Plus, the DIY filter is oversized for the job.
Beware, I have two (old) dogs and I'm going to train my mudskippers to attack! The archerfish already shoot

Thanks. I was initially only filming it because I noticed he was looking up at it and decided to grab the camera. I was stunned when he actually made the leap.

These are not the crickets you are looking for. :P

Seriously this is so cool I even tried introducing the OH to the thread but got the expected blank look.

"Great shot mudskipper! Now don't get cocky!"
Listen, I can't get my OH interested and she lives here!

You might be onto something there
I could post a video every day with something new that they do. They are, hands down, one of the most fascinating fish I've ever kept.
