Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

These videos aren't really very satisfactory in my opinion and really have no place here.
Please do not add more in this vein.
Doubtless some will not agree with me so I'll leave the link then everyone can decide for themselves.

I watched the vids and i agree with ya john. Fair enough if you didnt know the Puffer would eat the fish but that guy should be in a tank on its own.

Live crayfish, snails ect.. is a better diet.

Not very appropriate but I'm not going to slate the guy for it. Maybe the original poster could do what Alex mentioned and try to research what mbus would eat in the wild... I'm sure they wouldn't come across pinky mice, yellow labs and silver dollars!
He needs thigs like snails and shelled prawns to keep his beak under control.
OP, I'd sure love to see a video of the fish on his own with no other fish in a tank setup close to what he'd have in the wild.... I'm sure that would impress everybody here!

Have a look at this link...

have to agree with jihn on a fish keeping forum this vid isnt appropriate, no real justification for this practice of feeding a live fish to another, we're here to promote fishkeeping and i personally think the vid of the puffer eating the lab dosent promote this, it could easily be fed mussels prawns etc and still be happy and healthy... my opinion

Fishkeeping the Only way to get wet and wild

currently 25 tanks, and breeding is the aim of everything i keep

Give these fish shelled crustaceans. Its what they normally eat and does wonders for their teeth, oh, and they require a tank to themselves, as they mature they will become more aggressive...

No, slating someone isn't the way, education IS ! there is absolutely no need to feed these Fish anything other than commercially produced fare, Shrimp, prawns, small fish like silver eels etc. are more than acceptable to most Puffers. There seems to be a section of Youtube uploaders that have a Ghoulish interest in feeding live Animals to various creatures in the hope of gaining maximum hits on that site, I am always amazed at the level of abuse these people give to anyone who protests.

Please don't feed live food like Pinkies & Goldfish etc. to the Puffer, I doubt the Puffer cares but normal, caring people do.

Kev.

thats a lovely puffer, they are great pets, but nearly all puffers are only suitable in a tank on their own, they WILL eventually kill everything in with them especially the mbu
the whole live feeder topic has been done to death, but like i did for my puffer: raise feeder snails and shrimp, they need food with hard shells to stop the beak growing closed. so ok, shrimp may be too small but you could raise apple snails and feed when they are the size of his eyes. but please keep him in a species only tank if you dont care for the other fish's lives then offer them free on here i'm sure plenty of people would find good homes for them

also that link wolfsburg put up is great, something with decor and wood to break his line of sight will make him happier. the more a puffer has to investigate the less depressed he'll get, trust me i've seen it with my gsp when i got him, now he smiles at the new owner!
