Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hiya just wondering what peoples thoughts are on goldfish and the amount of aeration they need.

ATM im looking after a friends goldfish (2, not sure what type will look it up later) they are in a 20 liter tank with no filter and are at the surface gasping for air quite a bit of the time, im just wondering what peoples views are on this as most goldfish are kept in similar if not worse conditions, IMO goldfish tanks need some sort of filter or airstone for aeration, anyone else any opinions.

Thanks very much for the offer, i will organise a small pump today although the tank is way to small for these fish as well, ideally they should be housed in a pond or a much larger tank, i will try and have a tactful word with the owner when they return, you would think pet shops would know this by now and stop selling tiny tanks for these potientially very large and long lived fish, i think thats what annoys me the most.

Edit: haha i see you have the ugly Oscar as well for your avatar, how do i avoid getting one of them..........stop posting!! :D i will have to join the campaign over in the photo section about the removal of the Oscar avatar!!!

All fish need filters.simple as that.Coldwater fish are even more messy eaters and wasters than trops so they need one even more so.From a suppliers point of view we always make sure the option is always the for customers to buy a filter for a tank and we make sure to explain the benifits..we make more cash..they have a healthy fish that doesn't die in fifteen seconds after they get home! some people just dont want to do it the right way no matter what you tell them. This country lacks the real education systems and laws that other countries have.Selling goldfish bowls should be against the law imho. It's not so all the suppliers have to keep up with their competition or face loss of sales.Personally If I had my own shop I just woulnt sell them.I also heard from a customer this very morning who bought a tank and filter that the fish he got was "won" at a school fair!!! how can schools still allow this to happen????it is being ingrained into the national psyche that fish are a disposable and expendible..I dont know how many times after telling a customer about the whole deal with a filter they utter the words "ah sure if it dies..we'll buy another one..."Is it any wonder if this going on in schools. rant over.

dont make me come over there.
