Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Algae, Algae, Algae! was created by conor (conor)
Hi all,

I have a small deck pond, with a ridiculously oversized filtration system.
The pond is only 400 litres capacity, and the filter is for 3000 litres.

This is it:
www.pumpsandspares.com/lotus-filtration/greengenie3000.php
And I choose a maximus 1250 pump to run it.

Now the water itself is clear(ish), but I am still getting blanketweed.
I do feed the fish a lot, and the temp is very high at the moment -
27degrees the other day! Could put discus into that (nearly).

Should I simply do a major water change with RO water? I have been filling it with the RO "waste water" and dumping water from the pond to water the plants in the garden.

Suggestions?
Conor.

Problem sorted.

The wind blew a garden umbrella over, which very kindly redirected _all_ the water out of the pond.

I am now in the process of re-filling with RO/DI water.
Should sort out the algae once and for all. :)

Update : the algae came back after two weeks, so even using RO water made no difference.

Think I'll go for barley straw next since I have a UV already.
The bulb likely needs replacing in it. (Its a greengenie 6000)

The water itself is clear - under all the algae :(

If you have alot of surface algae your best bet is the get in with a brush or pond vacuum and scrub it then remove with net.

Then use barley straw and algae remover Barley straw needs sunlight and stops the algae growing further if you have alot of algae to will r]probably have to remove by hand with net had to do this last year it's long and painful but try it.

Also check that your genie is able to handle the volume of water i had to add a larger pump
I still use the old pump aswell

it's worth it for peace of mind algae in ponds go mad in the summer months regualr cleaning of filter is a must also

Hi Conor

Sorry but I was browsing this site & had to comment on your post

Don not put waste RO water to the pond it will only send the mineral content or TDS levels through the ceiling. it may even kill the koi if the levels get to high. Also never add RO water to any water environment unless you able to measure TDS levels & carbonate hardness of the water
If your doing this without testing you may well be killing the koi.
Blanket weed needs a few things to thrive and minerals is one of em.

Ensure the pond has lots of flow through it the more water disturbance the better, replace the UV bulb if needs be or better still put one on the return to the pond.

There are a few products on the market that can tackle your prob.....
the best in my experience is Cloverleaf Blanket weed treatment, or Interpret Pond Balance. Since your pond is so small I can give you a little sachet from my home supply.

DONT put waste RO water in to the pond.....may I ask...who told you to put waste RO water into the pond?

Thanks Curragh Koi,

It was I who told myself o use waste RO.

The way I figured it was:
90 odd % of RO water gets wasted. Only the good water leaves the membrane, and the rejected water -> which has no sediment larger than 5 microns, and also has no chlorine or chloramine (aswell as other disolved metals) due to the carbon filter, is still going to be better than tap water (as it contains all of the above)

By flushing the membrane, this gets rib of those additional nutrients that are glued to the membrane wall. So I figure I'll flush it for a few secs, and the waste water should still be far better than tap water. Unless I'm missing something :(

yes your missing something...we all agree TDS means total dissolved solids...yes your right the waste water will have no sediment levels in it at all and may appear pure but its TDS value will be through the ceiling ie dissolved levels due to ion exchange.
Fortunately the tap water in the Dublin/ Kildare area comes from Ballymore Eustace, from a recent report it has a TDS level of 150-170ppm it is considered marginally soft. Suggest you just filter the water with active carbon cartridge only, after that your water will be fine.
But dont use waste RO water , the waste water from this will be hard and
will have a high TDS level.

The koi will not feed as well, can go lethargic, fat & off colour as result of High TDS readings from waste RO water. Koi in a pond are the very same as koi in a fish tank and react the very same way.

some interesting reading that will get you thinking ,

Think you were right about the dissolved solids - no more waste RO for me!

I have not seen the fish in a while :(
Hopefully they are just hiding under the _algae_
