Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Has anyone any experience with female koi fish ? I have one in the same tank as a male koi fish and she is getting very fat will she lay her eggs and could they be fertilised by the male ? My plan is to put them into a pond when its finished in the summer.
Any info would be great.

What size are these fish?
Remember that carp will grow to at least 2ft long (longer still in the wild) so I kind of suspect yours will not have actually become male and female yet.
Now, nothing's impossible in the world of fish (they don't read the Forum either) so it might be as well to rather expect the unexpected.
Should they breed they will just as quickly eat their eggs so I would suggest you leave them to their own devices in the tank and hope they spawn in the pond, once ready.
They generally spawn late Spring/early Summer and lay the eggs in plants so keep an eye on their activity and if you note anything looking even remotely like breeding behaviour retrieve some of the plants which might well be laced with eggs. If and when this happens ask again and someone will advise you as to what steps to take next to hatch them and rear the resulting fry.

Thanks for the info I don't know how old with fish are they are about 5 inc long and I think they both have been in a tank up till now. I have the male 6 months and he didn't grow is this just because he is in a 120 ltr tank.

The growth rate will be slower in an aquarium, more so than in the larger water area of a pond - but it can be said that they should grow all-year round indoors as the temperature shouldn't reach the area where growth will stop (as in your outdoor pond).
Have you made a check, I'm a bit doubtful that a five-inch carp might display sexual characteristics.
In the breeding season male carp develop 'nodules' (for want of a better word) around the head and gill-plate area. These disappear after the breeding season passes.

I didn't even notice how to tell a male from female till I google it last night,
I only have the female two weeks since then I noticed her getting a fat belly lol
the lfs might not have been feeding her as much.

Koi of 5 inches long are certainly not sex ally mature and too small to breed ,koi are very hard to breed in a tank situation as the parents will almost certainly eat the eggs and to make things more difficult they nearly alays spawn at first light when us fishkeeper are still in bed .finally out of a spawning you would be doing well to get a half dozen good colour fish . This is why it's best left to the Japanese who breed the best koi
