Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Best place to buy fancy goldfish in/near Dublin?

Hi guys

As the title suggests, I'm trying to add two fancies to my tank, just wondering if you would recommend anywhere in Dublin to buy some? I'm determined not to go near any of the normal petshops.

Some people have suggested Seahorse Aquariums, Artane Aquatics, and Aquatic Village, Kinsealy petshop has also come up in conversation, but I thought I would defer to your knowledge and expertise.

Looking for somewhere with a good range and good ethics

Thanks in advance

All those you mention will be able to accommodate your needs but on top of those I have also seen some very nice specimens in Petco (Long Mile Road)and Maxizoo (Finglas).
Further afield is Maidenhead Aquatics in Carlow (not exactly Dublin) and Fintastic in Dun Laoghaire (i see from their lists they have a good selection also).

None of these would count as being a 'normal' petshop and the ethics of the people who manage the Fish sections of all is beyond reproach.

Good luck in your quest, let us know - preferably with some snapshots (for those fans among us) - how you fare.

Thanks all, not looking for anything too fancy, just that I've been in the mainstream petshops
and seen some real horror stories, un-quarantined fish floating around on their sides, decomposing carcasses lying on the bottom of the tank etc., I presume they just don't treat/care for the 'stock' because it's not economical?

Good quality fancy goldfish do pop up in some of the most "unexpected" shops.

All the shops mentioned in some of the posts above that I have been in have had some good stock over the times.

Also, Newlands Cross is always worth a try as they do have some nice goldfish.

Hey guys

I trekked out to Seahorse in Ballymount on foot, never been there before and the place was amazing but the goldfish stock a little disappointing. Didn't want to leave empty-handed so I picked up this nice blue oranda (he's in quarantine at the moment, hence the tiny tank)

That's gas, they are a very distinctive looking Oranda, I've only room for one more in my tank so I'm toying with the idea of either a red-cap Oranda or a Ranchu at the moment, though my last experience with a Ranchu was a bit heartbreaking

It will be easier to find a nice Oranda than a nice Ranchu in Dublin (really nice non-floaty Ranchus are like hen's teeth) but I personally would choose a healthy typy Ranchu over an Oranda any day. Their swimming style makes them a lot cuter and gives them a lot more personality, although the Orandas have a very cheeky face. Having said that, Newlands and Petco had some super Orandas today, including a great big red one in Newlands with a goose head-type wen the size of a small mandarin orange. That is my major regret about our two Orandas - the other one being a redcap named Paddy - their wen size is tiny and is not growing no matter what we feed them. They were not babies when we got them so the window of opportunity to groom them for bigger headgrowths had already passed.
