Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fish in Dublin Zoo was created by Vincent (Vincent)
I was recently in Dublin Zoo,,,no smart comments,,it was as a visitor , not a resident...

For the life of me , I cant remember whether it was at the gorilla or orang enclosure..Theres a water feature, pond / lake thingy..
I noticed hundreds of fish in it,,,and have no idea of what they are,,,I asked one of the keeps around and he had no idea either...
Its driving me mad,,,I doubt its heated, so Im assuming they must be cold water fish

has anyone else ever seen these fish,,and any idea of what they are?

I heard they are supposed to be opening an aquarium house in the zoo in the future. I think it was Gerry Evans who mentioned at one of the early LFKS meetings.

Ken.

Hi

I think I may have confused people...I dont actually mean the lake in the Zoo,,,where they keep the flamingos and where the chimp islands r located...

This is IN the Orang or Gorilla enclosure....

they aint the fish I saw,,,
anyway ,,,i guess i shud go up take some pics to post...
Great news if they do put tanks into the Zoo...They should be told to contact some of the expert from here for advice if they do,,,maybe we can all go on a days outing????...

ah ok... that pic was the lake. re: aquariums in the zoo, not likely, they have talked about it for years, and all their resources have gone into the new elephant enclosure.

Speaking of the zoo. We go up their pretty regularly with my 4 year old. Given the space they have, they could do more with it. I find the selection of animals to be pretty run of the mill. The African Plains is good, but there is very little on the Garda HQ side of it which makes the walk back pretty boring.

I suppose it all comes down to funding.

Ken.

i agree ken they never seem to exhibit any unusual animals nowadays and there are almost no birds and the extra space in the african plains is badly used. i was at belfast zoo recently and there is a lot more to see and great enclosures such as sealion and penguin underwater viewing. you should bring cian up there sometime as its not too far from you. one other important point though for the less fit like myself belfast zoo is very hilly.

Those fish are definitely Rudd or Roach.

Difficult to tell when they are in the water but my money would be on Rudd. (I have caught hundreds of both species in my time).
They look like very good sized fish.

The lakes in the zoo also hold large carp & other species such as Perch - I am told some of which are of record proportions.

If anyone is ever in Salthill in Galway there is a sea life centre that has an excellent native species tank with some large pike. The place in Bray had lots of native species last time I was there too.

the fish in the photos are 100% rudd and are very big for their size,in the large lake as you go up to the african plains there are carp here and also rudd and roach

but as reguards the fish in the small pond i havnt seen these so wouldnt know, but the only species i can think of that stays small are gudgeon, dace, stickle backs of both kinds and not sure if there are any others

but nice pics of the rudd wouldnt mind taking out my rod and catching them all day

and i remember years ago when i was a kid so im 34 now so we say 28/29 years ago there was a tank in the turtle enclosure
and they had cichlids in the tank which species at that age i couldnt tell you but do remember hearing somebody say they were cichlids

most definately Rudd or Roach or a cross breed of both, very common coarse fishing species, caught them many a time as a nipper even kept them at home till they got too big
