Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Welcome

hi at last i have found the website. i live in dublin and i have 4 tanks. one is coldwater with goldfish frogs plecos and loaches. the others are tropical. one is a 2ft with a lobster and catfish, one is 1ft with minos and killies and the big one is 4ft with a bit of everything. not keeping fish that long but i am definitely bitten by the bug. i have just started trying my hand at keeping real plants as opposed to plastic ones. my big tank is up and running since february and i have to say it is easier to keep then the smaller ones. probably like you all i am looking for the site for my next tank...

I used to own a 4ft and a 2ft years ago but now am back again with a Juwel 70. nly have space in my bedroom for it. Tis very quiet which was important as Im a light sleeper. Still cycling the tank. no fish yet. Just a plant or two.

Any favourites for LFS in Dublin?

Ah! so this site has got a forum,.
Hello everyone i'm from Dublin and like you all i'm a fish fanatic.
At the moment i'm keeping Killi fish (some for sale), fat sleeper gobys,
loaches, plecos (L-02, L-200, LDA1), bagrid ornates, rosberos(mix), pencil fish, oto's, talking cats, and the list goes on and on,,,,,
I've been keeping fish for a short while now and like most i started off with a bowl. Now i have to put on a white coat and a snorkle to enter my room.
I would like to know what type of fish people are keeping, are they breeding anything at the moment. If so how they are getting on and how successfull it's been.
I also think it would be a good idea if we could buy, sell and swop fish on this site.
I think the only place for doing this in Ireland is a free add paper or site and this would be a much better place for trading. It's just a taught. :)

I reckon neons. Im going for a planted tank. Used to keep zebra danios. Great fish. Theyd actually eat live flies that managed to find their way into the tank and land on the water.

THE NEON'S WILL LOOK GREAT IN A PLANTED TANK, THEY WILL REALY SET IT OFF.
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR NEW VENTURE.

This forum is only around a little while and has 9 members. Give it a chance dude!

Is this the other fish forum you use? TropicalFish.com

Yea I came across this forum initially while searching on google. Then through Daves page I found the tfc board. Also Im a member at fishforums.net.

I like the idea of an Irish board but it needs a chance to get going like any board.

Well I had purchased my Juwel Rekord 70 from Dublin Pet Stores on Capel Street and had gotten a voucher for 30quid.
I initially addressed the lighting by purchasing an Arcadia C2 unit and an extra reflector and powerglo 15w bulb. Easy DIY job to get it attached to front of Juwel hood.

Initially I set up the gravel for a day but went and purchase finer black/dark gravel from Blanch. I then purchased a bunch of Elodea Densa and an Anubias Barteria from same. Also got two Hygrophila Polysperma. I had just left the plants in there for two weeks. On Saturday I decided to mosy into town. My nitrItes were still at 2ppm so I wasnt going to get fish but wandered into Whackers. I wanted some bogwood and they were selling decent bits for 30quid. I was tempted but then went downstairs and liked the setup. they had a nice Amazonian set up. I noticed a large piece of bogwood with the heatlhy Java Ferns attached for 32quid so I went a bought that. No worries about tannins being released!! So came home and set up the tank.
Had also got a Nutrafin co2 unit so set that up and running

Am quite pleased with the setup at mo. Ill try to get some pics.

Well today went back into town(day off work!!) and decided to get 12 neon tetras for the tank. Bought them from Dublin pet store with the voucher. Id still like to get some algae eaters and a catfish nut Ill have to be careful about overstocking as I dont have an airpump/airstone.

Id had my eye on some shrimp in Blanch so went in and got two ghost shrimps. Great fun to watch. The noens are still getting used to the tank as they are hiding away. The co2 unit is bubbling away nicely but I still need to get a KH test kit as I dont got one yet.

Im still considering getting a 36w t5 power compact unit as Im still concerned about lighting issues but the plants I have as you can see above are all low lighters.

Yes, yes before you say I DID buy something from Blanch but they were only shrimp. I wont buy any fish from the place. Plants are ok though also.

anyways Im pretty happy as of yet. Its been years since I used to have a larger 4ft tank with UGF and constantly rented out "You and Your Aquarium" by Dick Mills from the library in the Ilac centre!!!

Looks like your pritty much up and running.
The bogwood/fern was a nice purchase.
I would keep a close eye (morning-night) on the ph with the Co2. It can swing the ph , a lot.

:) Yup, it should have, technically. The order has been reschuffled so now Trop Aquarium threads are at the top. That should be better. I suppose general tropical fish chat will go in [Tropical Aquariums] / [Fish].

You may also have noticed that Darragh has added some new skins. To personalise with your choice of skin go to your profile page and adjust the "Board Style" drop-down selection box to your taste!
