minding goldfish, stick to their poor conditions?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all
i am minding two goldfish for the boss for two weeks
they are in a dismal small filterless "tank" with filthy water, gravel and nothing else
they are fed nutrifin golfish flake and nothing else,
they get untreated tap water in their changes
will i upset the apple cart by giving it a good gravel vac
and water change (perhaps the gravel is holding good bacteria)
i may add a few low light plants to improve water
on to the food, i have frozen bloodworm, live grindals
and novotab and decent flake
i am wondering if the change may upset them
or if its a bad idea to up their standard of living
for two weeks and then they go back to their old ways

My only advice is if u do it do it slowly over a few days as their may be high nitrates etc and they have gotten used to this level of crap enviroment. Do about a third of the gravel clean with a 10 percent water change over a few days and clean it that way it should lessen the risk of chemical shock
You know people the boss may not like it but a bit of advice might work if presented properly, good luck with whatever u decide to do

cheers shea
i put an airline in they seemed to like it
cant find a stone so its just the tube bubbling
the water is manky, the gravel must be filthy
i an gonna vac it gradually, still concerned though
that its possiblly the only source of good bacteria in the tank
cheers

2ppm ammonia

added ammonia remover, few small plants and a tiny internal filter
which they can keep when the fish are returned

Your right the gravel probably is the only source of good bacteria that why doing it in thirds benefits this situation your still leaving some behind, plants are a great addition too fish must feel like they've been given a holiday too. Fair dues to you many people wouldn't bother if it wasn't their own fish

don't waste a small internal on them* as you'l only slightly prolong the agony, have words with the owner and suggest tips so they can look after them or you might be able to help re home them for them, i get the immpression that these fish are a burden on them and they might go for the latter
edit: *them being the owners

cheers lads
its the bosses daughters fish and im sure they know no better,
you know the story because goldfish are so hardy and survive this crap
uneducated people figure they are happy as larry!
they are decent folk and ill strongly suggest improvements!
john and edward enjoyed their bloodworm dinner tonight!
change from the flake! (their names are nothing to do with me!! i swear!)
i think these fish have been around a year or so
cheers
