Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

CK1 hows things mate im the same setting up a marine tank now myself

as you can run a marine tank with out a sump although i have heard its much better if you have a sump

you can use an ex filter just take out the media in the filter and have crushed live rock, rows phos, and carbon

your main filtration in a marine tank is your live rock so the more the better

you would be best with a hang on skimmer or something like that

as i said i am only setting one up and can only base all this on what i have read on the net and talked to a lot off lads that really know there marine

wish you the best with the tank

keep us posted

Good luck with that my marine has been running 2 years now and its just like running a fresh water when mature.

As blue ram said
lots of flow around the rock ...try for washing machine water movement,
lots of live rock the best thing you will ever buy.
keeping down nirates and phos, I use Red sea NOPOX, works a treat dont have to use sump.
If you want a reef keep with softies and one or two LPS, and have them up near the light.

As for good lighting either if you have loads of money TMC leds...dont buy anyting on ebay..from china Leds from them are crap. Or if you keep on top of changing the blubs every 9 months two are three T'5 "I have T5 the works a treat.. have a plate, and two maze corals that are growing great up near the lights.

Also when you are creating your reef with live rock get some expoy putty "red" from sea horse aquariums, this will create a solid structure so when your snails get big they will not knock over any rocks.
I care for my marine tank every day, dont have to test much anymore because its mature, but have lost some fish, corals and iverts to get to this point.

Good luck with this project it was an eye opener for me too.
