Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

750 litre marine tank installation

I'm going to be installing a 72\" x 24\" x 28\" Custom made aquarium with a 48\"x 18\" x 18\" Sump over the coming weeks, its been built by clearseal and all the spec has been put forward by the customer.

I'm just guaging interest as to whether anyone would be interested, if I did a step by step installation guide including pictures, as I'm sure it would benefit some people if not inspire others.

If anyones genuinely interested, let me know.

Cheers

Great. It'll be my first time, incorporating a sump and definitely the largest tank to install into someones home. Hopefully any minor mistakes that I may have will help people learn and avoid them themselves. I'm currently waiting for the sump to arrive.

Anyone who wants to see the tank first hand can view it in Aquatic Village in brittas this weekend for an idea of scale, its a seriously heavy tank. First move should be made next week at some stage.

Excellent, I think that would be a great idea. It is a large project and anything learned could be very useful in the future for some of us.

Dave,

Your timing is perfect. Early next year I'm installing an 84\" x 30\" x30\" (1200 litres plus 600L sump/refugium) in Wall Reef System in the new house I'm currently building. I've even cut out the hole in the wall last night with a consaw (Dirty Job!) But someones got to do it. Once you've done all the hard work on this installation there's more work for you in County Laois. Keep us updated. I'll stick up some photos of the \"Hole in the Wall\" as it progresses. Think of it as \"Tullamore Reef\" the sequel !

Best of luck with the project. I'll be stealing all your ideas!

Ok well small update, Tank and sump were delivered to house and are in place. However, the chippy hasnt done the best of jobs on the cabinet, leaving me no room to access to the Weir plumbing which poses a slight problem:angry:

Going to consult with him and the customer as to modifying the existing stand or scrapping it and making a new one, as the system is going to be well over a tonne its quite important to have an adequate support.

Hopefully once the main frame is built the tank can get going, be quite quick once I can get the plumbing started.

Your dead right john ;) Chippys are a right pain in the neck ;)

to be fair to the guy, He specialises in stairs mostly so I can't give out to much.

At the end of the day its going to be too heavy to not have it done right.

Hey Dave

Tank looking good. Never knew clear seal made tanks that big!! Just on question is the tank going to be a reef tank ?? and what type of lighting you going to put onto the system ??

Not as expensive as you might think.

they'll do anything from a 4\" cube right up to 10' x 2.5' x 2.5'.

They begin to get expensive once your height hits over 18-20\"..Thicker glass is needed, more struts etc.

Get on the blower to the lads in old bawn or brittas and they'll get you a quote.

Hey.

Tank is going to be fish only, as its quite deep I'm going to be using T5's. Halides would be ideal however it would be overkill on a fish only system. I played around with using arcadias range of T5 units, both luminaires and Controllors however, I think I'll just use two Juwel T5 units with new marine whites. They're reliable and relatively inexpensive in comparison to a luminaire.

At present the tank remains 3/4 full. I've had a few runs with everything running relatively smoothly except for the slight problem of a few drips coming from the bulkheads, these have been remedied and hopefully will stay intact.

chippy is coming again the weekend to hopefully finish the outside panels.

any more questions feel free to ask.
