Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

My 2nd Marine tank

Right Folks,

As you may recall, I got my 1st marine tank (a 55l nano) last november. Anyway in the meantime, I managed to convince my better half to buy me a new tank to replace my 120l Malawi setup. Anyway I gave the Malawi tank to a friend of mine and got my new 180L Rio (god bless the buy and sell section of the forum)

I set it up and was all set to leave it with some water sand and a minimum of live rock (funds are tight) until i saw a reef tank was being shut down (god bless the buy and sell section again). So off myself and the missus trek down to Rosslare and end up getting 50-60kg of live rock and 2 fishies (a blue hippo tang and a flame angel) for very very small money. (he still has bargains left down there, check out the buy and sell section)

Below is my first (bad) pic of the new setup with the 2 fishies in frame (it took ages to get them both). I still need to get some powerheads (all donations of same will be greatfully received!) in there and some proper lighting but its looking pretty good if i do say so myself!

sorry to rain on your parade but a 3 foot tank is WAY to small for a hippo tang.
heres a good link on tangs and minimum tank sizes: www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=739380
the best of luck with your new venture

hmmm, it'll have do for the time being.

I would presume that those sizes quoted in the above link would apply to mature fully grown individuals?
My guy is about 4" head to tail and should be fine for the next while. I do take your point though, he will need a bigger tank at some point. I'd hope to upgrade one of my other tanks next year and will look at something in the region of 400l plus, but he should be fine for the next year or so.

apparently they are really fast growers. most people wouldn't keep one in less than a 6 footer. also they like a lot of open swimming space. IMO 30 kilos of live rock would be plenty in a tank that size (provided you don't over stock). do a search in that forum for hippo tang and you'll get plenty of good info on him. they are a beautiful fish, and for that reason very popular, but wont thrive in a small tank mate. hope this helps.

hmm, I'll look into it. Worst case scenario is i have to sell him. :(
But, if i win the lotto tomorrow night (and I plan on doing so) I'll get a tank to shame you all!
