Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Fish FX have them and I heard someone ask how much and I am almost sure they said €40, but not 100% sure.

Isn't there a guy in Galway farming them for export to China? ? I think I remember seeing something about that for Nationwide a while back. It was interesting at the time, but can't recall much about it now

as mentioned above - www.seahorseireland.com - They also now have a shop in Dublin near the red cow roundabout - I've been there and Boy - You would not think of getting a seahorse anywhere else.

I have seen the wild caught ones and they from what I am told last around 1 - 4 months. Waist of an investment of you need to get more once you get into them.

Good Luck - Let me know how you get on with them

seahorse reland are definitely the people to go with. My ones were fine, no hassle from them at all, they are just the same as other marine fish - clean water and reguliar feedings and you are flying. I fed mine mainly frozen mysis.

Just to kick this thread up again.

I am just setting up a wall tank with seahorses. Still in cycle mode but my kids can't wait. Misses is not to keen on another tank but my argument is - well I am not taking up any floor space !
Tank is nifty - Got it from Seahorse Ireland at the red cow round about.

Will keep you posted if anyone is still intrested.

Any specific requirements needed for the seahorse. i.e livestock/corals you should avoid..... water parameters etc.

In the process of setting up my first nano marine tank and would love to add one.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Re. Seahorses ... Apparently male seahorses are very prone to developing issues with their air bladder. They have to be 'stabbed' with a needle to help them deflate. On the other hand, females don't seem to have that issue (that is what I was told recently).

Regards,
Valerie

The stock in the tank is as follows
1 x Hippocampus Reidi (Seahorse)
2 x Cleaner Shrimp
2 x Clownfish
1 x Matrix Crab
4 x Red Leg Hermits
4 x Blue Leg Hermits
10 x Snails
1 x Feather Duster Tube Worm
1 x Colony of Ricordia Florida

Additional stock to be added will only be soft Coral and you can not have any stinging Corals with Seahorse or aggressive fish parameters are as reef system I do a weekly change of filter wool in rear chamber and a two weekly water change all is good with water parameters

I could be totally barking up the wrong tree here, but...

i thought there was serious ethical issues with keeping seahorses
and that tanks have been proved to be a totally unsuitable environment

I believe that \"creme de la mer\" (they have a tank in the airport)
were instructed to remove their seahorses
www.indymedia.ie/article/78586

is this just neglect on the airport tank
or a general issue

Perhaps if they had someone with half a brain looking after them they might have survived, clearly they didn't.

Problem is people don't understand the sensitivities involved with them and put them with totally unsuitable tank mates that stress them and out compete them for food.
