Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Strange creatures in the tank! was created by conor (conor)
Hi all,

I switched on the lights this morning to some surprise.
I saw two little critters hanging around beside the starfish, I've no idea what they are, but they have a striking resemblance to those critters you get when lying on the beach. You know the ones that jump around the place?

(mind you, they could be anything)

I assume they arrived with the live rock (eggs?). Anyway, well cool.
I just wish I knew what they were!

They are too small to get a photo of - my camera is crap.
Any suggestions?

Your fish should find these a tasty snak. Other than that no problems.
I have at least 4 roaming around my tank.

I have tons of these little suckers in my tank, the fish feed on them. Have seen a couple over 1/4"

Yes, they are indeed harmless. But now I have an explosion of little anenomies, well they sting my coral (SPS) anyway, so I assume they are pest anenomies.

The funny thing is, they look rather like the one which died and was never found!

Must take a picture and upload them soon.
maybe tonight. :o

Conor can you discribe these little anenomies. What colour are they?

The little worms you are talking about, i think they are bristle worms polychaetes.
These useully trive if there is to much nutrients in your tank.
Some of these are evil and will feed on your corals. Some are quite harmless.
Some wrassers will eat them and i think banded shrimp also work.
If you dont want to increase your livestock get a clear plastic tube, put something like a couple of layers of clingfilm over one end.
Place some food lika a piece of krill, mysis inside and put some clingfilm over the other end.
Poke a small hole either end in the clingfilm just big enough for these to climb in to the tube.
Place the tube flat on the bottom of the tank before lights out.
When they enter the tube and eat the food they will swell up and not be able to get out of the tube.
You can empty the tube in the morning's and put the tube back in to the tank at night with some fresh food for them.
Repeat this untill you are satasfied they are all gone.
Do a google on them to check this info as my brain is a bit slugish today.

I'll get some pics together, and upload them to my _new_ site.
I registered www.reefkeeping.eu but have no uploaded any content yet.

I hate coding, so if anyone would like to help out... ping me. :)

The worms are definitly bristleworms, they will not harm anything in the tank, they are actually a little bit of a benefit they help clean excess food from your tank, as long as they dont start taking over I wouldnt bother with them.
As far as the small anemones, it sounds like aptasia, i would get them out as soon as possible, they can take over a tank fairly quick, you can use joes juice, or something similar. Here is a good article on the subject www.aquariumarts.com/joesjuice.html
