Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

new tank research...

Hello everyone,

Im almost done with my research for my new tank, and wanted to get some opinions from more experienced marine fans... I have had about 6 months marine experience with a nano cube, and recently upgraded to a 280l aquamedic percula 90. The tank is empty at the moment, im going to set it up in a month or so...

Here is the wish list I put together:
Fish:
-pair of common or true percula clownfish
-flame angel
-tail spot blenny
-citrinis clown goby
-yellow tail damsel (possibly 2 or 3)
-royal gramma
-foxface, lo vulpinus (I have my reservations about this fish because of pain it main cause me)

Inverts:
-pair of cleaner shrimp
-a few peppermint shrimp
-hermit crabs
-snails

Corals:
-Mushrooms
-Star green polyps
-finger coral

My main concern with this list is compatability, and beginner friendly species (hardy). I am not in a hurry so I would like to acquire more experience before moving into hard corals, anemones, and more difficult species to keep.

Ok well, this is the list folks, any thoughts???

your list is fine mate, i wouldnt bother with the damsals though they are very teritorial and can become a pain, bullying other fish. whats your resevations about the foxface mate?

Paddy: My reservations about the foxface is because of its venomous dorsal spines. Realistically I dunno how often it happens, but i wouldnt like to get stung just when im trying to clean tank or do a water change...

About the damsels... Its a real shame, but i probably will take ur suggestions on board as i have heard that several times before... The yellow tail as far as I know its the least aggresive species, but then again, not peaceful enough probably... I was thinking possibly some chromis instead?? Do you have any other suggestions for a hardy species that can be kept in pairs or as a trio?

Thanks again for all the help!

you wont be able to keep just 3 chromis. minimum number is 6 or they will kill each other. I started with 11 and they weeded themselves down to 8 after a couple of days. 2 more were killed within 6 months and left me with 6 now 18 months old. I think you'll be grand with 6. Can add up the inches of fish and how many inches a 280 liter tank can take if you like.
