Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The salt has its uses, but if you have a disease in the tank then it isn't always the be-all and end-all.
It can help (so long as you have salt-tolerant fish) make some treatments be more effective. But the LFS should have told you why they recommended it.

Ah, that makes sense, Louis,

I had a dreadfully stubborn strain and got to the point where the tank was one Day away from beginning to glow given the amount of stuff I was putting in, I just said eff it, back to the old reliable, Salt, I used proper Marine Salt, First, I did a 75% Water change to rid most of what was in the Tank, next, I put in some activated Charcoal to remove the remaining Copper etc that would be lingering, I left it like this for a few hours, then, after removing the Charcoal I put in some Exit AND the Salt, according to advice on doses, this was done in a QT, next morning, most of the spots had fallen off, I continued the Exit according to Instructions and all this at 30 deg c, all's well now, I made sure to keep feeding as soon as I noticed the spots to ensure their strength.
The Fish in question are Rummies and Cardinals, I lost 2.

Thanks kev I've been using API doing 25p.c water changes but still had White spot. Got d Esha today did a water change and put in the dosage. At least Esha doesn't require 48 hour water changes.lost a shed load all my tetras I'm left with my latest additions 4 rummy 2 Congo & 2 buenos aires tetras. Glad to report my pit bull Pleco is made of sterner stuff. I bought an internal filter which I hope will improve water quality. I hav'nt used the salt yet,I'll give it another day but jeez don't ya lose heart especially when ya think ur doing everythig so right. Thanks again your advice as always is invaluable.

It's soul destroying Louis, especially as you feel incapable of doing a blasted thing, it's doing the rounds at the moment, the strain needs to be looked at by the med manufacturers, people say Quarantine is the way to go and I agree, totally but sometimes even the transfer of a Fish from the QT is enough to trigger an outbreak, the ph or the temperature being slightly off. I believe implicitly that the time between an LFS receipt of Fish and the selling of same is too short but I would sell with as little delay as possible if I owned a Fish/Aquarium retail premises I'd be selling them off the Delivery Truck before they even opened the back Doors !

Times, as you have heard repeatedly, are very difficult and my Heart goes out to the self run Fish retailers.
