Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi all,

This may be a little controversial but i have a question.

Ok so as some of you may know i setup a Red Sea Reefer 425xl before X-mas. The tank ran for 1 week no stock, then on the 8th day i got 2 clown fish and added ATM colony. Since then i have been testing water parameters every 2 to 3 days and have added a 6 line wrasse and 2 corals. I have not done any water changes since the tank was setup.

My parameters are:

Ammonia: 0.00
DKH: 8.1
Phosphate: 0.04
Nitrate: Undetectable on Salifert test kit
Nitrite : Undetectable on Salifert test kit
PH: 8.1
S.G: 1.025

So my question is with stable water parameters like these should i do water changes? All opinions are welcome. I know i cant test for everything with home test kits but i will be doing a Triton Labs ICP test in the next few weeks.

Thanks,
Stephen.

Hi.
Nitrite and ammonia 0 level show that your filtration is working well for current amount of fish quantity. Which is good. You can increase your fishes population in your tank.

Water change is only about parameters you can control by home taste kit even ICP.
Don't waste money with ICp test now. ICP test can be useful after 6-12 months. The price is about 1/2 bucket of salt, or 8x25ltr cans of prepared salt water. But for the same price much better to do water change instead ICP-OES test.

At this stage your tank is new, not so necessary to make water change. If you wish to use no water changes method I would recommend you to google classic Balling method, Tropic Marine Centre (TMC) still produce sets.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Tank still going well, Po4 has come up a little to 0.06 so yesterday i added 100g rowaphos into a filter sock. Will check Po4 again at the weekend. Also forgot to mention i am adding NoPox at 3ml a day.

I will hold off the ICP test your rite no point wasting money.

Thanks,
Stephen.
