Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have a 100 litre tank I got off another member on here I want to setup as a marine tank,
Mainly soft coral with a few inverts and clown fish(keep the little fella happy) and maybe a wrass or two (livestock will be decided upon at a later date as its not going to be a quick process)

Anyway what direction would be safest filter wise? External I'd guess?
Internal Skimmer OK? Or should I go with hang on back system?
I know 1kilo for every 10litres of water is recommended, but would I be better with more?
Will I need a wave maker in such a small tank?
Anything else I've missed?

Substrate will probably be crushed coral

Yes I would get an external if I were you.
I wouldn't bother with a sump for that size tank and I've found externals do the job anyway.
I would go for a hang on skimmer just because there's less stuff in the tank then but up to yourself.
You might not need a wavemaker but I would add a small powerhead of some sort, you'll want to have the tank turning over about 10 times per hour so depending on how strong the external is. But I would get a powerhead anyway because it's handy to be able to change the direction of any currents in the tank.
10kg of rock and crushed coral is fine yeah :)

I will of course!
Haven't got anything for it yet, but with the impending sale of my Impreza, I plan on buying a few bits!
Can't buy live rock or live sand until I have water setup....
At 100 litres the chances of needing wave makers is minimal
So realistically I think its only going to be Skimmer, filter and tank at the min!

Oh and lights for corals once I setup some kind of lid aswell
