Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi there. Have you decided on what type of setup you wish to maintain? There are big differences between the different systems and big differences on the cost of their setup an upkeep. Finding things out as you go along is a bad idea when getting into marines as mistakes can prove very costly and it this that that turns many away from this side of the hobby. Do as much research as you can, then do some more. It pays to have a plan and stick to it when getting into the salty side of things. There are some great books on keeping marines out there and I would strongly recommend you invest in one or two before you dive in. I can highly recommend The Conscientious Marine Aquarist (2nd edition) by Robert M Fenner. This brilliant guide got me through setting up my first system an I still reference it now.

I'll second everything Jay has said, research and more research is key.

Live rock amount is dependant on tank volume. If you are using a decent skimmer and the right amount of LR than an external filter is not really necessary, unless you want to use it for housing carbon or rowaphos or something.

Live sand also depends on what you want to do. Some people utilise a deep sand bed (DSB) to help reduce nitrates, in which case you need at least 4 inches of it, however most people only use a DSB in a refugium. If not using a DSB and you want sand then just a 1 inch layer on the bottom is fine. Another thing to note is that live sand bought in shops is rarely that, as it has usually sat in a bag for weeks/months so is no exactly live. I would suggest getting normal crushed coral sand and then "seeding" it by adding some actual live sand from a fellow aquarists setup.

Regarding powerheads, this again depends on the tank volume. You would ideally like to be turning over 20 times the tank volume per hour. So for example, if your tank volume is 250 litres then you will want enough powerheads to turn over 5000 litres per hour. Check the powerheads specification, it will tell you how many L/PH it turns over and just have enough to meet the 20x turnover rate. (Some people actually use close to 40x turnover, but this is not really necessary in my opinion).

eric i'm gonna go out on a limb here (please don't think i am having a go) i think you are rushing things, i said the same to you when you started tropicals not so long ago and that resulted in a disaster, i noticed you pm'd about a set up, now by all means if you want it get it, but i'm gonna offer you the same advice, take things "slowly", this is a bit more work and a bit more expensive and if i was you i'd grab a few books and get reading, you don't want to make this jump and learn as you go, even if it was till xmas you could study a lot and have the extra funds. now you could dive in blind folded and turn out to be the greatest marine keeper ever but there is no harm in educating yourself on the subject before hand, it will benefit you and your fish

please don't take this as i'm trying to discourage or dishearten you as i'd love to see you take this on and be successful. the more the merrier for wen or if i take the plunge

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

Ok, here's a Phone Camera pic, not very crisp but just to show how it looks at the mo, really crackin' looking in person. I'll talk you through it in detail later.
