Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Firstly what size is your tank?
What kind of fish do you have in it?

If you take the plant/rock out is the brown stuff slimy to the touch? If it is IMO it is probably a growth of Algae. Algae in small doses will usually grow in your tank however an algae bloom (excessive growths causing the glass etc to appear covered) can occur as a result of a combination of over feeding, too much light and excessive nitrates in the water.

An algae eating fish is usually a good start, reduce the amout of food fed to the fish, and reduce the amount of time the light is on in the tank for a week or so. Increase the frequency of the water changes to reduce the amount of Nitrates/Nitrites in the water.

Hth.

Algae, or brown hair algae.

Remove it with an old toothbrush.

All tanks have algae no matter what, but if there is loads of it this could indicate poor water quality.

In extreme cases a mild bath of a bleach water solution will clear it. i.e take the plastic plants out, put them in a bucket of water with a couple of capfulls of bleach. Leave soak for a half-hour and scrub off. The plants will be gleaming. Just make sure to properly remove all traces of bleach before introducing them back to the tank, by rising repeatedly. The last rinse should be done with dechlorinated water.

This is a quick fix as ultimately the problem could be water quality.

Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for breakfast.

Bah, I just rub off the algae into the water with my fingers.
The fish tend to eat some and the rest gets sucking into the filter.
Mind you if I had a real bad growth I'd remove the plants and clean them properly.
I tend to overfeed myself.
Lots of algae in spurts until I stop.
Don't overfeed, no matter how much fun it is.

theres no need to stop feeding them the wafers, infact most suckerfish ( plecos and the likes) will need these in there diet. just ensure that your not overfeeding in the tank, and that the lights arent on too long everyday, if your not keeping real plants then it wont matter how long the lights are off, but dont have them on any longer than 10-12 hours daily, you can ensure your not overlighting by using a timer switch.
I also find the algee to be a pain in the ass to get rid of if its left too long, regular cleaning is the best cure imo!..

The money was just resting in my Account!
