Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

i've recently gotten a stunning pair of A. Bitaeniata (thanks jamie) but i've been setting up a 60L tank for when they arrive but it just wasn't quick enough :silly: .... i was planning a blackwater look but unfortunately its the wrong time of year for looking for suitable leaves or alder cones so i bought alder cones over the net.
anyways unfortunately i haven't got anything (yet) to measure the ph, tds or anything else i may need to test for so its just tapwater for the moment, instead of messing with r/o also, with a temperary piece of bogwood and cones to lower the ph somewhat :)
i'll let the pictures do the talking but its by no means the final layout... i'd love to get the water darker and use roots instead of bogwood (anyone looking to pass on roots let me know B) ) but its general till i get testers and stuff

without alders

alders soaking... she'll be looking for her jug soon

Looks great so far!! Iv never used alder cones before... I always use catappa leaves. How long can you keep the cones in the tank?

cheers alex B)
to answer your question honesty i do not know :pinch:  ... they do eventually loose their affectiveness but by then i hope to have a scatter of capatta leaves over the sand and roots. i used 1 cone per gallon as advised and the water is prity brown, i just have to wait on the ph pen i ordered so i can keep checking the ph, i've read that the ph will continue to drop as long as the cones are still in the tank.
i have another type of apisto here too i hope to chance my arm at breeding (although few have managed to) but i hope to try another blackwater method with them so i can compare the effects and which is better for me :)

in my lfs yesterday i was looking for a kh test kit but was out of luck so i got tetra test 6in1 strips as a guide. the kh measured at 3deg/d and the gh was at 4deg/d.... has anyone used these kits before?
