Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Right guys, Im looking for some advice here.
Im hopefully picking up a 5ft Juwel Vision 450 complete with about 50 Tetras (cardinal and rummy nose) and a few other fish and plants and stuff on Thursday down in Wexford and transporting up to Dublin.
Now i have a heap of fish bags and a couple of styrofoam boxes for the fishies and plants but i have no way of taking as much tank water as possible.
When i get home, obviously i have to get the fish out of the bags asap but whats the story with putting them into non cycled water???
Ill be filling the tank from a garden hose and bringing up the temp with a kettle / buckets of hot water from the kitchen and adding API Stress Zyme+ and API Stress Coat+ but they wont have time to do their thing!

What can i do / buy in my LFS tomorrow to help?
Any and all help appreciated!

Could you not just buy a few large plastic oil drums to transport the water?

Hi aquaman.

If the tank is already cycled then bag then filter media in the tank water like you would do with the fish and plants.I'm not an expert but i think the bacteria will last awhile bagged up.Mybe the guys can confirm how long the bacteria will last. The filter media is probably the most important part of the lot.If i were you i'd fill containers at home a day or two before (enough to fill the tank) and treat it and let it come to room temp, or if u have some spare heaters you can bring them to the required temp.I would not fill the tank with water from the kettle or from the hot water tap in the house, that water will most lightly be contaminated from the metal heater elements.

If i were you i'd put it out to the guys on the forum who would be local to you and see if someone could take the fish off you until u have the tank setup. It cant hurt to ask if not i'd ask my LFS to mind them for you.And ofc get everything in the house set up and ready to go before you leave for the tank.

Good luck,

stuart.

Few thinks what I know,
If Your filter is "dirty" enough and well cycled You be OK if You will do that in less that an hour or more that that if You can provide oxygen for the bacteria, some people are saying that if Your filter is not running for 15 minutes You can kill bacteria in it (is it truth? hard to say)Your filter will be disconnected and will have access for oxygen. I presume You will have more than those 15 minutes. Do not dry the filter just move it like it is, If You move water You'll use loads of the bacteria material  Just give few days and make a big filter media maintenance.

If You are able to bring with You like 1/4 of that water from the tank You will be absolutely sorted,

With boiled water I will use some more of water conditioner boiling water is different too ......

And do not dry the tank completely there are some colony of bacteria in the substrate and on any porous roots, and stones.

It'll be good to cover the plants with the wet newspapers to do not let them dry.

Oh there is no rush with putting fish back in to the tank, for sometimes they are for 1-2 days in delivery and they are ok In Your case You will have time to warm the water by heater.

Might be wrong with that one

What about leaving a deposit at LFS for storage containers, fill some before you leave with tap water and treat it, then bring as many as you can to Wexford to carry the sellers tank water?

I just rang seahorse and they confirmed that you can rent the containers from them for 5 euro (non refundable)
Its only refundable if you are buying water from them as far as i know.

This is my solution so.

Thanks for all your help and advise lads.

Ill schtick up some pictures when i get the tank up and running

to put a myth to bed.... last year i swapped some of my blue angels for a fluval u3 internal but the bloke was picking up some geo's for me on a trip up north also... so the filter was bagged in tank water and headed of on a round trip from dublin-belfast-kildare (i'd say the guts of 5-6 hrs) and by the time i got it i put it in the tank asap... ammonia was comming up as about 10ppm before and shortly after was at 0ppm so i was 1 happy camper :) ... i'm not saying there was no bacteria die-off but i must say my faith in heresay fairly diminished

you won't nessicarily need to transport much waterbut maybe only fill the tank as much as needed for the filter to function (even with freshly treated water) but have the water ready well in advance i'd say. you can topup the tank as needed and eventualy will have a full tank... AV do bottled bacteria which may be handy to have at hand for initial setup and incase you have any early ammonia spikes. personaly i'd fill the bath tub the night before and treat it

The easy and stress free way to make this move is to use organic aqua. you would not have to worry about moving any water and filter bacteria would not be an issue. i have used it in this kind of situation and it is perfect. no lugging of heavy water or trying to keep bacteria alive.
1. bag up fish with plenty of oxygen. preferably one fish per bag.
2. empty tank/clean off filters and move to new location.
3. position tank/equipment and fill with tap water.
4. bring water to correct temp using boiled water.
5. add organic as described on pack
6. then immediately add fish
all fish will look perfect and if you wish, after a month you can discontinue organic and revert to normal cycling seamlessly.

Was talking to Dan in seahorse aquariums when I went to rent some containers and he told me about this stuff too. He said its the stuff they use on a build or move so I got the stuff for a 500L tank.
Unfortunately this tank sale fell through but I've put in another offer on another vision so fingers crossed
