Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin
what to do next with fairy shrimp

i was also wondering if allowed to grow would they be suitable for loaches(clown/yo yo)? I read in Wikipedia they usually grow to about 1cm. i was advised not but glass shrimp with loaches thus this question.
it seem to be that they may have the possibility of being duel purpose a natural filter and food as they eat microalgae and are eaten by the fish. do i am most likely wrong on this!
all advice welcome

I think you were right first time - your young Guppies will polish them off pretty quickly, some might escape in the short term but my feeling is that they'll not long survive, certainly not to grow to 1cm...I could be wrong, often am, but my opinion is that these are very basic organisms which will not have much of a sense of self-preservation so would not seek out the filter as a place of refuge...although they might just stay there if the food supply is worthwhile...I'll be interested to hear your observations.

I would have to say i do agree with your thinking perfect sence to me! its a record 60 so its a jewel internal so i will but some directly in there. the tank they are in has been standing 48hours now and i started by adding stress coat to the water so will be safe in the filter. and i have to say they are very interesting and i found a site with a receipe for food for them. so who knows were it will lead still cath has agreed we need a micrscope so i get two benfits from this happy guppy fry and a reason why i have wanted a micrscope

I wonder can you feed them to tangs? Just throw a few eggs into the filter and as the shrimp venture out they'll get nabbed. Not use them as a whole food but just as snacks....

I got a hatchery from ebay Germany, it is a flat disc shaped one.
With a little modification it can go right in the tank.

I didn't bother with a hatchery as such. Just a piece of pipe blocked at one end and a grill on the other. Hopefully when they hatch they will swim towards the light.
Hope it works - will post a photo once I have it installed.
Post a link to the hatchery you got.....
I was watching one on eBay myself but a bidder called \"platy252\" was bidding on it, so left it off...

Not sure it really does anything mate, only provide the critters with a long roundabout route to the light at the centre, where they get munched!!!

I put some of the eggs into my DIY contraption and they flowed right out of it. They're lighter than water so they float. Reckon your hatchery will work better. Eggs are tiny - fair bit smaller an brine shrimp I think (long time since I saw the BBS eggs)
What modifications do you need to do to it? Prob need to weight it down anyway.
Threw a few thousand eggs into a glass vase with green water in it. See how they get on. Should be some food in there for them so if I can get them to grow a bit I'll be happy....

Still no sign of mine dammit.
contact them i know the shipping date we were giving first was wrong but when we contacted them got the correct date. from what i have seen on e-bay this guy is sound and prides himself on his rep should be now problem to be honest the problem is more on this end An Post the variation on delivery well ring your local sorting office. At times in the past they tried to only deliver multiple numbers which meant things can be sitting for weeks

24 hours after adding water -
One thing I noticed as their swimming pattern has changed. At first they were swimming vertically than they'd stop and drift/sink for a few seconds before repeating the process.
Now they seem to be swimming horizontally and mostly confined to two areas of the vase, where I presume it's the brightest.

FEEDING – The day after you first see your baby shrimp swimming around, you may
start feeding them. In the wild, fairy shrimp are filter feeders. They strain tiny particles
out of the water for food, mostly bacteria, algae, and fungal spores. In captivity, they will
live quite happily on a diet of “yeast soup”.
To make yeast soup, dissolve one packet of dried yeast (either bakers or brewers yeast),
one teaspoon of sugar, and a big pinch of crushed fish food flakes in 1/3 cup of hot water
(around 100 degrees, microwave some of your spring water). Mix well, and let it sit for
about an hour to activate the yeast. Be sure to use a container tall enough to allow the
yeast to bubble up. (An old plastic frosting container works well.) Store your “soup” in
the refrigerator or another cool place. This will be enough food to feed your shrimp for
weeks.
To feed your shrimp, stir or shake the mixture thoroughly. (It settles out quickly.) Use an
eyedropper or pipette to drip a few drops of the soup into the water. The baby shrimp are
still extremely tiny and need very little food. You can determine how much food is
enough by using this rule of thumb: The water should be slightly hazy, but not cloudy.
You should be able to see through it. If it becomes cloudy, stop feeding for a day or two
until it clears up. If it becomes extremely clear, feed a little bit more. Increase their food
as they grow. At about 2 weeks, the shrimp will need approximately 1 ml per day. When
they are fully grown, they will need up to 3 mls daily.

Post edited by: mwdragondk, at: 2007/08/18 18:07
