Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Kusuiri Company produce some. Really good stuff.

You can get it in aquatic-village. Is it for pond related matters or aquarium as its dosage applies to pond use but can be used in aquariums if its scaled down and you are careful.

You may find it difficult to get this, although i wouldn't have thought impossible, just harder than most chemicals maybe, there are a few reasons for this.

Potassium permanganate in chemical form is an oxidising agent, it can and is, used as a reagent for many chemical compounds including meth or methcathinone a class A drug , it is considered as a precursor, in other words it can be used very easily (when it oxidises) to make drugs, meth is basically what we would know over here in Europe as speed.

You have to be careful with this as well if you get it in the chemical powder form, if mixed incorrectly it can explode, permanganate was used in early flash guns that you see in the movies, if you mix it with sugar it will ignite, so basically be careful if you get it in the chemical form.

The good news is that in the dilute liquid form it is safe, also excellent for killing snails on plants if you dip them before putting them in the tank.

Let us know if you have any luck finding any other than the product Dave has outlined, i'd be interested as well.

The following is my opinion based on my personal experience.

POTASSIUM PERMANGANATE DOES NOT GET RID OF ALGAE.

In keeping with my name MRALGAE most people know I love to grow this stuff. NOT.

I as usual had a problem with algae, through my own fault and mistake this time, so decided to try a different approach to get rid of it. After a lot of reading I wanted to do the potassium permanganate (p.p) route and tried to get it with great difficulty here in Ireland and ended up getting it sent from England off the net.

So I stripped the tank and followed instructions I had found on the net by another aquarist.

What I ended up with was a waste of a day; red leaves which are blacker than red and still had the algae. So I reverted to a bleach dip (of which I had used before) on them with better results with this than with p.p. I have or know I am going to loose 4 of the plants because they are so bad and don’t think I will be using it again even after all the trouble of getting it in the first place.

I would like to know if anybody has used p.p. with good results or did you find the same as me? IT DIDN’T WORK!
