Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I cant see you having any problems.
The bogwood can soften your water and release tannings but this shouldent be a problem in a discus tank.
I also use LOTS of bogwood in my discus tank with no problems.

I dont know a lot about cichlids but i guess you could go for some Neolamprologus shell dwellers, Apistogramma's or something like the Nanochromis transvestitus.
You may want to check with someone who keeps cichlids for a better idea.

Too much bogwood ???

Only if - the tank water becomes black.
Only if - it causes the ph to crash.
and Only if - it has dangerous sharp edges.

thanks tony,
the discus (3) have been very aggressive to eachother lately, nonstop nearly... so much that one of the them has turned dark and has some off white patches....actually 2 of them have the patches now... fcuk!
only the alpha male is tip top... i treated them for slime/velvet as a precaution, i think thats what it is, caused by bullying.

are they so agressive because theres only 3 of them??
If so should i add 2 more discus or would that start a war?
they're in a rio 180 so thats why i only added three.....maybe if i take ot a couple big pieces of bogwood it will give them more space.
water parameters are all fine and i give 1-2 25% wcs every week.

what do you(s) think?

thanks in advance

Hi Panda,

When did you get them, did you get them at all the same time ?
Sounds like your fish have an infection. I would start with some salt dips, also I would not ad any meds into the tank at this point.

Here is some info on salt dips: ukdiscus.co.uk/salt_dipping_discus.htm

3 is an odd number for discus, can't you tell me the size of them please ?

i had 4...4months ago but one of them never ate anything except blood worm...tried starving him, mixing the granules with bloodworm etc...nothing worked , he had no physical symtoms but was the smallest.
theyre about 4 inchs...got them all at the same time from the same tank.
i only got 4 because the tank aint huge
too late about the meds, i already dosed with interpet no.7 slime/velvet...and the white patches are already nearly gone...but im pretty sure its from aggression...lowering their immune system....

the turquoise one (striped) has perked up but no the blue diamond with the patches has a cloudy eye, and one or two white spots sugar grain size....he is also hiding out as he has now become the bullied one....shit...now he is up the top corner of the tank

all have been eating ...

maybe the meds fucked him up?
