Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I found his on a heater today while doing a water change.
I think its some kind of Calcium deposit. It was burnt straight on to it.
Could it be from the Bread soda.
It came off with a knife and no harm done to the heater.

Yes,
It looks a lot like the buildups of limescale deposits I used to get on heaters in England...no bread soda needed there! Water company provided it free of charge!

Christ Anto, do you have to hit that water with a hammer before you can put your hand in? Wet cement has a lower GH

Ken.

As far as I know Bread soda only increases the KH but it might add Calcium to the water I am not sure.

Bread soda does not add calcium since it contains none. The proper name for it is Sodium hydrogen carbonate. It raises the kH.
Where was that heater stuck? At a gH of 16 it is quite possible to calcium dipsoits especially if you have silicia sand. That helps the clogging process. Your pH of nine sounds very high though

Because of my over stocking I sometimes had a ph crash. I like to keep it a 8+ but the excess nitrate and the low kh of 3 was hard to stabilise it.
Have not had a crash in about a year and all the fish are happy.
I have removed half the fish and I won`t be buffering it so much.
It usually is 8.4 but this went off the scale a little.

It came on when I put the batteries in it and no harm done .
That's a bit kicky Anto, I see them things on sale in Ireland before. They were only first sold in Ireland in the late 80s, you can get them in stainless steel, black like yours or orange even with ribbed, you you got all that cake on it I don know you can get a new one down a dirty dens LSS.
That would be a ecumenical matter!!!
