Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

hello everyone

im david and i keep marine fish and coral in my 180litre tank with a 35 litre sump

ive being keeping marines for over a year now, and i never kept any fish before, so marine keeping isint only for experianced fish keepers as a rule

I know nothing about the marine side of things.

But your tank looks fantastic. How big is it ?

this is my live stock

i have a load of different soft coral, as i said im only keeping marine for the last year so im still concentrating on the easy stuff, i have got a hitch hiking stoney coral thouhg and its my prize possesion

Fr Jack & paulm. are a mine of marine info. on this forum.

They know there stuff as most of the others who post on this part of the forum do.

If you have any problems they are around to advise you.

thanks

my tank is 180 litre and the sump is 35 litres,
i have
2 30w t8s
2 36w pc t5s
1 54w t5

i had to make a new lid for the tank so it could accommodate the extra lights, i would have put a metal halide light avoer it but i only have one 150w light at the moment and i dont have the cash for another,im going on holidays so im saving up, theres a brace bar in the middle of the tank so i wouldnt have being able to have just one metal halide light because i would end up with a big shadow having just one light

i made the sump myself and i had to mod the stand to fit it in, the tank is a rio 180 and it has its matching stand, so i just chopped the middle brace in and reenforced the sides, i managed to get a 35 litre sump in , its quiet small but it holds my fuge skimmer and return pump so its serving it purpose

i have a few different color mushys around the tank,these are the green lined ones

tis is my most recent coral, its a toadstool leather, this picture was taking a few days after i got it, so its not looking the best, all of its polyps are out now and it looks a lot healtyer

Lovely corals there mate, your doing a great job. You said in your last post that you had a MH light is it connected up :?: If not why not put it to one end of the tank for the corals that need the extra light :idea: and at a later date you can add on to your requirments. keep up the good work it looks great.

Nice invert only tank, do you know that ligh effect the nitrifying bacteria hence the more light the more it has a direct negative effect on the bacteria, assuming you have a trickle filter in the sump that is. The calñupura look newly added, hopefully it will take off, in the bay of Alcudia in 1 metre of water on the north Majorca bay coast it full of Calapura this tike of year, may be they put it there to clean up the environment as the Germans are in directly shitting into our beautiful clear water. (thats a dig at the soar Croats) as I am staying in a hotel in Alcudia at the moment and all the Deck chairs are reserved with towels, yet only half the German are lying in them as I write this. :evil:

That would be a ecumenical matter!!!

hi again

my laptop got a virus so i havent been on in a while,.bloody porn links

its not just inverts,i have some fish in the tank as well

2 clowns and a lawnmower blennie, its just hard to get them to stay still for a photo so i dont really have any decent ones of them, but ill post the ones i do have

i dont have a trickle filter in my sump, i have live rock rubble and caulerpa mexicana(could be wrong on the mexicana bit) its the type that doesnt crash, i still keep it lit 24/7 though

my nitrates are zero already, and its only be in there for a few weeks, this stuff is brill at pulling out no3, i dont think i would try a different method after doing it this way,

the reason i havent got the single Metal halide going is because the tank is in my GFs house, she shares with a few other people so im waiting for the esb bill to arrive before i go ahead with it (i have to pay a share in the bill now) so fingers crossed the bill isint so big,and if its not ill be able to put the MH over one side of the tank, , i have 2 small stoney coral fraggs that i would like to have under a bigger light source (hitch hikers) so if it all works out i shall put them close to the top and under the 150w mh Post edited by: buleetu, at: 2007/07/12 16:36

the bleeny photo is good but as u can see the clown fish pics arent, they are always moving so i never really get good photos of them

i got some new corals yeaterday,a bunch of clove polyps and a condy nem, the nem is gorgeous, he is shifting about a little but im sure it will settle soon enough, i also got a star fish , its brown and cream, hes all camoflaged out so i can hardly see him against the rock work, im not entirly sure what he eats yet but im doing some research now to find out

this is the stoney hitch hiker i was talking about,i think its called gonipora,its spread from a tiny little patch to this size in a few months, this is my fav coral

this is what it looks like when the polyps are out,i took this photo a few weeks ago, i have now taking the yellow pussy coral off the peice of rock that the sps stowed away on so it would have more room to spread around on

i made this little green yolk out of millieputt, its one day gonna be completly coverd in zoanthids,please god,i just hold them in place with an elastic band for a few weeks until they attach by them selves, then just cut the band away

i have 2 different color zoanthids, im gonna try to get as many colors as i can because they look really cool, im not having much luck getting them to spread, its actually painfully slow so i think i could be doing something wrong, im getting about 2 new polyps a month whic is really slow compared to other peoples zoa growth, im gonna do a load of research to try and find out the best way to get them growing

this is also millieputt, the button polyps at the top are spreading well but again im having trouble with the zoanthids at the bottom, there not spreading very fast at all

ye can see it on the bottom left of the tank, hopefully with in a year or so the whole stake will be covered in them

got a new shrimp today from the ashbourne shop, got a great deal on some coral sand and the shrimp,

GREAT SHOP i suggest everyone drop out at some stage, u will be really glad u called out, andy is sound and he will give u a good deal im sure

im not sure if its called a dancing shrimp or a fake peppermint shrimp,,, i will take some photos when he settles down and starts to come out

Where did you get the red people eaters? Those are hard to come by around here without giving an arm or leg for.
The hard coral you have is a type of montipora. It will eventually gain more color as it grows and the params are just right.

i got the zoas from fish antics, got them thrown in with the devils fingers i bought that day, ill have a frag of it to swap soon enough if u have anything decent to swap

i was under the impression that the stoney coral was alvaeopora, do u have any pictures of montipora that i can see to tell the differeance or confim that thats what i have, i got it as a hitch hiker, its doing really well

Your right upon closer inspection I see the open polyps.
Umm trading will be out of the question seeing how shipping overseas for overnight would be very expensive.
Where do you get your plugs from, they are quite unusual?

Those are Peppermint shrimps. Cool little buggers when you see them. I taught the one I have was sizing up a clown for dinner
but its just the way the act. :laugh:

RPE's (red people eaters) here are the red palys with the green slits in the middle.

hi guys

that shrimp i had is actually called a camel shrimp,a durbin shrimp or a dancing shrimp they look very much like a pepermint shrimp but these guys dont go near aiptasia the way a real peppermint shrimp would, so no good for getting rid of them

i would also suggest that a durbin dancing shrimp isint a good shrimp for a display tank at all because the one i had went into the rock work and still hasnt come out in the day time, if i get a torch in the night time i can see him but other than that ye wouldnt even know i have it

it also eats zoanthids and other soft corals so steer clear chaps

are palys and zoanthids the same thing just a different speices from each other or something? i thought the people eaters i have are zoanthids???

just updating my tank pics

i got some new fish the other day and 2 dusters

3 antias and a prple duster and a nice red one, thanks to andy in ashboure,bargin hahah

its hard to catch the 3 antias all in the same shot because they wont stop moving around, ill keep trying though
