Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi vincent

i stayed in the ghazala garden in naama bay, the hotel that was blown up in 2005, its all re built now and very nice too

there private beach hasnt got the best reef on it, but if u follow the divers from sinai divers out into the 10-18 metre deep water u will find sinai divers house reef which is amazing

i have some photos of it ill post as soon as i get them scanned, there from one of those dodgey local super market underwater 35mm cameras, i have to adjust the brightness of the pictures on photo shop but some turned out brilliantly

i went to ras mohammed too and tiran theres a picture of tiran below, i think that pic is of gordon reef

i done some try dives while i was there 2 at ras moe moe and 2 at tiran have u heard of the blue hole, i snorkled there that was the best of the lot even though i didnt get to dive it, its not a beginners dive so i dont think they do try a dives there, it plunges to 180m or something so is really cool to look down the reef wall to the deep

will u go back there again?/ if u ever do there is a place just a bit down from sinai divers in naama bay its called the red sea diving college, they have an underwater photography shop there that rents out proper under water digi and 35 mm cameras with the pylon flashes and everything, defo worth a look if ur going to go to rass moe again or even to one of the other good dive sites

these are some of the pictures from gordon reef just off the island of tiran in sinai

these photos were taken with a cheap underwater 35 mm camera with a tiny flash so there not really the best, i made them a little brighter with photo shop because when u go down to a certain depth mainly the blue spectrum of light gets through so there kinda dark with the dodgey camera

enjoy

royal angel and a picasso trigger

this is a picture of 2 lion fish taken at 10 metres or so, they were hiding in a big crevice at the bottom of a pile of live rock as big a truck

heres the close up

i caught a fish and it was this big hahaha

Great shots.Red Sea is a spot I havn't got to yet.I hope to maybe next year.Couple of the local dive shops here run trips,or we may just do it ourselves.Apart from the sealife,I really want to see the Thistlegorm wreck.
I know what you're saying about the camera,my dive camera is just a wee digicam with a dive housing, nothing flash, but was all I could afford. All my tropical dive location photos are predominately blue,Irish waters they're a green colour. As you say,the diff light spectrums are taken out the deeper you go,so unless taking photos in the 1st couple of metres in bright sunlight, the photos wont do the place,or the life any justice.

Post edited by: Acara, at: 2007/10/02 16:56

thanks acara, some times ye get lucky with one of these cameras and the photos turn out okay

have alook at the rest of the pictures below there from the blue hole in dahab, i didnt dive there just snorkled, theres a picture of a brain coral there that is the size of a smart car (ye know the little lego like cars ye sometimes see driving around dublin) its huge, i didnt think sa coral could get so big, i went to a few of the good diving spots over there but the blue hole was by far the absolute best looking place

the photo doesnt really do it justice at all, this thing is huge

hi guys

the picture with the shark in it is really cool, what kinda shark is that

and i think i would be leaving a brown trout in the water if i seen that my self, my gf and i were snorkling off the beach one day and she seen a nepolean fish from far away, she frightened the life out of me when she start screaming and swimming away as fast as she could hahah

ive read a little bit about the reefs in the wild and it says that in late spring or early summer the coral spawning time happens in the red sea and other reefs around the world, ive seen pictures and a video about it and it looks really cool, if u went in march or april and u were really lucky u might get to see that, i think the water temp is within a few degrees all through the year so it would be still nice and warm in the water at that time of year,id give it a go if i were u, we re going again in december for a week, we are staying closer to old sharm this time is that were u stayed

ye antoney sorry about that big paddy fish in some of the pictures haha

vincent they have an under water digi camera in argos its safe to 10 metres and it only costs 75 quid, that might actually be an okay camera for snorkling and shallow diving if u got a decent flash to go with it, u should have a look maybe

i took the first 2 while snorkling, this cheap camera is more suited towards snorkling in the shallows rather than actual diving because of the light at depth, i got one or 2 good photos but the first 2 were the best

something u notice when in a real reef is the size of everything, yes ur mask does magnifie things but everything really is a lot bigger than what we are used to seeing in our fish tanks and in the lfs that we might got to, i think it might be because a lot of the animals get to live so long in the wild, the clown fish in my diving pictures were really huge,as big as my fist or something and there nem was huge too it wsas white with purple tips and hard to see against the rock, but as soon as i see some clown fish i know there is a anemone close by so ye just scan the rock until u find it

enjoy

sea cucumber as big as a pillow

parrot, u can see how the light loses its color with depth in this picture, normally there really colorfull,he was also really big

grouper

yellow bush or pussy coral, i have some of this in my tank

puffer

fungia,.plate coral, as big as a dinner plate

Excellent!!
We're planning a trip there in prob march or april or thereabouts.Any tips on dive centres, resorts, etc???I WILL be doing the Thistlegorm wreck, other than that its just th life I want to see.I am looking to rent a proper camera with strobe etc,and not use my digicam in housing, for the reason you stated, the loss of colour due to light.

Cheers
Dave

PS Thanks for ID-ing the fungia, plate coral,I have photos of them too.
