Ditrivore "kits" for Deep Sand beds
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Contact fishism on 01 8720088. if you dont get an answer leave your Ph. No. and he will get back to you. Tell him you got this No. from someone from the Irish tropical society.
He should be able to get what ever marine stuff you are looking for.

I asked fishantics to order a kit in - I only meant to state that they did not have them in normal stock - not many people use such kits.
For my 12 litre!! nano, I feel it will be obligatory. I have already added some strange critters from my other tank - strange small snails (no shells) and those wierd worms things that look like millipedes. I have been observing them in the other tank for a long time now, and they seem to be beneficial -> the substrate is actually getting cleaner every day.
Later
Conor.

I think they are indeed bristleworms - I quite like them now that I know they do not bother the fish.
A few weeks back I found another strange snake like worm with a mouth at the end. It seems to live inside the LR and feeds on the foot of a coral.
The worm is quite small -> has bands around its body and never seems to leave its hideout. I am trying to determine what it is exactly, and the coral really does not seem to mind it. I do not see how I could remove it (aside from removing the entire LR it lives on) - so I shall leave it unless something bad happens - touch wood.

Peanut worm, will not cause any problems, got my bristleworms under check from my arrow crab and hawkfish. Only problem with the hawkfish is my cleaner shrimp is now a recluse.(LOL)

Did you have any joy getting a detrivore kit from FishAntics in the end?

Not yet, I am waiting another week or two as the tank is not yet 100% cycled, almost there though.
I have added some bristleworms to move the sand around, and eat detritus.
I must pop into the shop during the week - I still have to pick up my copperband butterfly - to eat the remaining aiptasia. Fingers crossed.

Was speaking to Simon there, and he can get the kits allright, just that he would recommend rather to go with hermits and cucumbers - they do a good job of turning the sand over, so think I'll just add a cucumber or possibly two.

Ah, but cukes can kill your entire fish stock if they die/get stressed as they basically turn themselves inside out and release thier insides in a toxic cloud!!

I would be intrested if you managed to get this detrivore kit.
I have tried to get in live Sand but the problem is that it dies by the time it gets into ireland.
Mexican red tip hermit carbs are great for cleaning the sand as well as Cucumbers abd serpant stars and sand sifiting stars.
Still would love the biodiversity in the sand bed as well.
Let me know if anyone got there hands on this kit.
I'm off to the Glee show in Bermingham - see what is on off over there.
Andrew
