Flickering lights but not due to bulbs
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Have a Trigon 190. Bulbs started to flicker when I turn them on for a few mins but then comes on properly...but still work. Stayed like this for a few weeks until I got round to buying a new bulb (which i assumed was the problem) Have switched out both old bulbs for new bulb and still have the problem so it doesnt appear to be bulb related (unless both old bulbs went at exact same time, seems unlikely).
Any thoughts from anyone? Its just got worse today as bulbs keep flickering and dont come on at all so really need to fix....
Thanks

Are they fluorescent lights? If so the Starters could be the problem!!

Juwel crap strikes again, I'm also pissed off that such a company make the bulbs themselves making any other choice a non starter, excuse the pun, I have the same problem with mine but I think the reason the starter gets screwed is because the seal around the metal end of the Tube gets loose , allowing moisture in to cause the ballast to go , oh and thanks Juwel and JK Aquatics for allowing this crap to continue unabated , nearly everyone I know with one also is presented with crackling on off switches, I will NEVER recommend their Aquariums to anyone on the basis of their ill functioning lighting systems, their Tanks are great but pull the Finger out JK as distributor and Juwel as manufacturer and show the buyer some respect.

Like everything else these days, from Cars that only have diagnostic software and central processing units and Electrical appliances with screws and Bolts that look like something from the Apollo mission that no one in the Planet I live on has tools to open them with, Juwel Light units are hermetically sealed within a Plastic Coffin, inaccessible to anyone, they are made in such a way as to prevent ANYONE from repairing them making the purchase of a whole new unit the order of the Day, as you can glean from this, all the gubbins are inside and cannot be fixed.

Would you do me a favour and give the ends of the original bulbs a gentle twist to see if they are in any way loose?

is it worth getting a second new bulb in case there is a problem with both original bulbs then do you think?

I thought as much, I think the damage has been done and genuinely believe the fault lies in shoddy Bulbs, if moisture enters the Bulb it could be the cause of the Ballast getting effed up, if that has happened, a newer Bulb/Bulbs, won't make any difference.

I saw that too and have very dubious electrical skills, is yours out of warranty?

That's a pain, give the guys in Fins Fur And Feathers a Buzz, they had them a bit cheaper, when you think how Sh1t€y they are in construction etc you'd expect them to cost a few Euro.

Just a though ,when i changed the light on my jewel i bough an arcadia light instead as parts and bulbs were much easier to get for it.As said jewel lighting systems are a joke. The one for the 60 litre i had was te same price as a shop was selling the whole tank for !!!!!

I don't have any electric skills, but instead of forking for a new unit, I bought a new balast and fitted just by following the instructions from that tutorial you're talking about and couldn't be easier if you follow it step-by-step.

Have to say I'm delighted with the LEDs I got from you kev they're brill. I got rid of the tank hood and lighting which was noisy and put a sheet of perspex on topof the tank. Do ye leave a light on all night in your tank or is complete darkness overnight ok.

I'm glad everything worked out, I just turned everything off, the blue led is just a sexy option.

I was toying with the idea of going the DIY LED route, but don't know if they're enough for a planted tank. Can you give us some more info about the LEDs you're using?

thanks all. I rang around and have to say Maxi Zoo in Finglas was the cheapest by a distance (as it also was when I bought a filter recently): worth a call if you are ever buying anything for price comparison
