Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have had leaks before with my first 1200 and it was identified as a faulty hose adapter, tetratec replaced - no questions asked,
I did a clean of filter on sunday and noticed a pretty heavy leak today, luckily it happened when it did and I saw leak.
This time it appears the leak is coming from the seal gasket,
Q1) any idea where I can get a new seal (asap) does any shop hold these in stock???
Right now the filter is turned off. I have a samller sponge filter in tank (1400lts/hr, i think) that was mainly used for circulation purposes and is running, My tank is 430lts - 20 x small to medium malawis, And I use Organic Aqua, + air hose.
Q2) To any OA heads out there, is this setup safe (withour main filter running for a few days)
appreciate any info,
Thanks
Tom

I am totally open to contradiction Tom, but I'm nearly 100% sure.

" Biological Filter. Considered essential in all other systems, biological filters produce vast amounts of nitrate which are generally not broken down resulting in more maintenance. It is essential therefore to ensure that any filter you may use does not become too biologically active (WASH ALL FILTER MEDIA IN TAP WATER ONCE EVERY 4 WEEKS).
Tight fitting lids. Organic Aqua breaks waste into a harmless gas which needs adequate room to escape or it will become reabsorbed into the water and cause algae. If you are in any doubt over the suitability of your lid please ask your local supplier or contact us on our website."

Does this mean then that you can survive without a filter as ultimately its purpose (when using OA) is not for bacterial growth but circulation???

I put in an order online last night for one, so no panic, anyways I might be sorted,
I took off seal and cleaned and lubed it up with vaseline, put on a new hose adapter (that tetratec sent me a couple of years ago due to my original one being faulty- but never used as they replaced my entire filter

cheers,
Tom
